I am fighting with a decision that is very tough for me. I have an EOS 1V film body that I virtually*NEVER* use and lately I have been tempted to dust it off and let it go to someone who could get some use out of it. I hate to see it just sit because it is such an awesome camera but digital is just so much easier to deal with that I can't make myself mess with film scanning and such.

I know that the chances of my using it are slim but it's the fact that I waited so long to be able to afford one that I hate to just let it go now that I have it. On top of that, it's so d*mned sexy! ;-)

Once I get my 1D, and possibly a 10D as a back-up/second body I can't forsee shooting film again... On the other hand, sometimes I like to go shoot a roll just for the heck of it. On that note, I'm thinking that I could get a much cheaper film body that would do anything I'd do with film these days and put the money to better use.

Anybody care to share with me their struggle with a similar decision? What did you decide? Do you regret it?

HI Chris! I just Bought a 1V - am an amateur photographer and I also have a Sony 717. I like them both!! There are times that a digital comes in handy for when I want to put pics online and the film camera simply captures that awesome 10FPS. Wow....I luv it. So, until the 1DS can compete with its film version vis a vis the FPS - And until the price is around 3000 - I'm going to hold onto both....I think you should hold on to your 1v and get a D60. (since it's going to be on a big time sell soon!).

my 2cents.

Oh wait, that's the D60/D30!

Never mind...

Put it this way, this is probably the last flagship film SLR Canon will make. I have both the 1D and 1V HS, and cant imagine getting rid of it for anything unless it was replaced by even a better film SLR. Right now you feel there is no need for shooting film with digital being so easy, but trust me, there will come time, and I bet very soon you will get an itch to try some new or old favorite film that out. Why would you sell the best film SLR ever made for half of what you bought it for?
Keep it, you will use it sooner than you think.
Good luck

I couldn't believe it when I read your post. I have the same problem. I agonized for a year about stepping up from the EOS I to the 1V. Finally, a year and a half ago I bought the 1V. What a beauty. Smooth as silk, and fast. Fast focusing and motor drive. It was a joy just to hold and cradle it. Well, a few months after that purchase, I bought the D30. Since getting the D30 Jan. 02, I rarely use 35mm film. I feel so guilty leaving the 1V in the closet. It seems like a big waste. There's less than 50 rolls run through it. But I can't bring myself to part with it. I wish my D30 was as good as the 1V with regards to the focusing system, motor drive, and solid body build. Sorry Pixel, I don't know what to tell you. Except that I have the same problem.

Gang,

I have the reverse problem. I am now getting my new 1Ds system up to speed. Totally awesome system. It's smarter than me by a long shot. I have the old Canon F1 system as film backup. But after using the EF L glass, I now want a film back to match the 1Ds. I want the 1V.

Yes, there are those times when I feel the need for film...there are still some magazines that favor Velvia slides for instance. I heard a prediction from another pro who said after the 1Ds..."within 18 months all pros will be using digital for magazine submissions." After using the 1Ds for a month, I tend to believe him.

The files it makes are awesome and large prints off the Epson 2200 are as good as I can get from the photofinisher here in town. So now what?

I think I will wait to see if I need film again in the near future. If I do, I will gladly trade my entire F1 system for one of your 1V bodies.

Cheers,
JL

Chris:

Don't have the 1V, but the EOS3, and was feeling about the same. Went "picher takin" for a couple of days this week, and was glad I decided to bring it along. I filled up three 1gb microdrives along with two 256 mb cf cards...and ran out of digital film. Well, I had the forethought to take the 3 and some packs of film that had been in the freezer over a year, and kept on going.

After the film was developed, was happy I had taken it along for more reasons than just the backup, because there is a certain pleasure in taking the prints or slides out of the box you just don't quite get from sitting down at the computer and getting ready for a long and tedious digital darkroom job.

I'll not sell the EOS3 anytime soon, and if I had a 1V, I sure wouldn't.

Don't sell that wonderful machine.

Hello,

I have EOS 3 and no matter how much DSLR develop, I will keep my EOS 3. EOS 3 is very good camera but 1V is The Best.
Thanks,

My struggle is the just the opposite. I'm trying to take the plunge into digital, but love film, especially B&W. I also like the B&W process work. But I see some distinct advantages to digital as well. I'm shooting with an A2 now...although I've thought about upgrading that as well. You may be on the right track. Sell the 1V and get a less expensive film camera.

When you have the 1D and the 10D as a backup, there is no sensible reason to have a third (expensive) film body unless you regularly drop your cameras.

I traded my D60 and 1V HS towards the 1Ds which is now my only digital body. I do get paid to take pictures sometimes and I got myself a cheap used 300V (I think it's called Rebel Ti in the States) as backup just in case.

Having a 1V gathering dust is not nice, the thing needs tender loving care and regular exercise, sell it to someone who will give it a good home!!

The camera is only one of the photographer's tools ....

I have one of those book ends too! Once I got the 1D, my 1V just sits and sits and sits...BUT I cannot get rid of it. They are twins after all.

Canon has been and will continue for a while, to make digital cameras from this awesome body design.

I shot a wedding for a friend a few months ago. One of the guests wanted to shoot some pictures at the reception, so I gave him the 1D a lens and he went to town; I gave his friend my 1V, a lens, and he was off. I kicked back and watched, it was hilarious.

I decided to take a photo class at the community college and shot a roll of B&W. It was a fun reminder of the old days. The dark room...

You may want revisit other types of photography again ... what if you want to shoot infrared, print on fiber paper? What if your digital camera goes down? What if you have kids that want to be a photographer just like you? What if ... anything?

Maybe they will start making digital backs and not whole cameras ...

I gonna keep mine.

If some day, I am shooting some sensitive photojournalistic scene and the authorities say "hey give me your film!" I'll have my 1V loaded on standby and respond "Oh ... all right!" and hand the the blank roll from the 1V. Then I'll do a little switchy turn and tell 'em "Oh yah, this one's still empty, see, no film."(1V again)

If none of the above applies to you, and getting rid of it means you could get another lens or something; then go fot it, sell the sucker. How much do you want for it?

What would we do with an F1 system? I've been a Canon user for 30 years. I don't think I remember how to use the F1. :-) No thanks on the trade. If I ever have the need for 35mm film, the 1V is the camera to have.

I was in the same sitatuation late last year. Only I had gotten the 1D and no longer using my 1V. I just couldn't see the 1V sitting in my camera bag for months or years. I finally made the decision to sell the 1V. When I got it out to give it one last once-over before putting it back in it's original box I noticed when I opened the rear door the rubber gasket stuck fast and pulled loose. It was kind of difficult getting it back in place.

My conclusion ? Some of this stuff just isn't designed to sit around unused for a long time. I got $1300 for my bare 1V and am fairly happy. I did hold on to an old Elan II in case I ever feel the need to shoot film. :-)

I almost always keep my old cameras. I have 2 children. And I hope someday they will take up photography if they do I will have a camera or cameras to give them. The only camera I have sold was my Canon G1. And that was because it was just behind the times and the shutter was so slow that no matter how I took a pic they were almost always under developed and blurry.

I know the 1V is very expensive, but if your kids are young in 10years it will be a classic. My dad had a Nikomat EL that he gave me as a starter camera when I was 16 and it was great.

Mac34

Just my view. Of course if you don't have kids the point is moot.

I don't even have a clue what they're going for right now. I can't even remember the film forums I used to visit so I can go check out prices! Maybe that's a clue as to whether or not I should sell it. ;-)
How much do you want for it?

If I could convince myself that this was true, I would no doubt keep it. I'm just very unclear on my "film future". I know that my recent "film past" has been very limited. The last project I used the 1V for was taking some shots of my new home while it was under construction. In fact, that's the most it has been used since I bought it! It probably hasn't had 25 rolls through it since I got it. That's been quite a while now...
Keep it, you will use it sooner than you think.
