I'm planning on a summer vacation in Europe (2-3 weeks). My current plan includes: Milan, Rome, Venice, Florence, Zurich, Vienna, and Prague.

Are there any must-visit cities as a photography-enthusiast?

Although my wife thinks it is just a tour, I am planning for strictly a photo vacation. If it's not worth taking pictures, I'm not stopping by:)

I'd also appreciate sharing your European trip (route, visited cities, transportation, etc.)

Thanks,

Ted

Hi

Skip Milan, and go to Sienna instead, since you are close by in Florence anyways. And did you simply forget Pisa on your list?

Skip Zurich and rent a car and drive up to the small VERY picturesque villages in the Alps. Forget about Müren, unless you go there specifically for the view of the mountains.

Have a nice trip

...but after Rome, Venice, Florence and Prague you'll be in pretty good shape! Stockholm has amazing architecure, but probably nothing that you can't find in Prague. The Stockholm archipelago, on the other hand, is pretty special in the summer - I've never seen anything quite like it anywhere else in the world. The women are pretty amazing up here, too, but I guess it's a family vacation, so let's leave them out of it!

Well, I'm trying to find a way to visit as much great places as I can in about 3 weeks. Since I'm not familiar with the transportation, I'm struggling with the order of visit, and the duration of stay for each citiy.

In other words, it would be great if someone can suggest how many days I should stay in each city in which order.

Stay in one area at least a week! Drive around it, get to know it well. Shoot in perfect light! Don´t do this "half of Europe in 3 weeks" thing, you´ll end up with a "been there, done that" album. Europe isn´t as small as it might look on the map, it´s packed with great stuff and has a very good photo/square-mile ratio (best you can get?).

My personal suggestion: Fly to ROM, get a car. Stay in Rom for 2-3 days, then get out and explore the area between Rom and Florence for at least a week, don´t forget the Maremma area between Siena and the oceanside. Don´t be afraid of driving, that´s not Sicily, it´s very relaxed driving on mostly empty roads. Don´t go to the Chianti valley.

I totally agree. 7 BIG European cities in 2-3 weeks is a joke. At least 1 week/city. Also notice that European cities is by FAR more photogenic than American (except for NYC)...

Rome, Venice and Prague are all very nice and you'll need at least 3 weeks for them. However don't forget the smaller surrounding areas and villages.

I am giving your bias opinion as I have not been to the Northern Europe
but only the southern part. Also I recommend for 2-3 week trip stay in
Italy and try to see everything that is possible.
I am planning for strictly a photo vacation. If it's not worth taking
pictures, I'm not stopping by:)
Wrong attitude! Case in point in Florence you cannot photography
Michelangelo's David. But it is worth see with your own eyes and see
what "real" masterpiece of sculpture is all about. Or how about the
Sistine Chapel in Rome, you cannot photography that too. So you are
not going to visit it? I think you are shooting yourself in the foot with
an opinion like that. And that gun is a shotgun with both barrels.

Here goes my opinions

Milan - Nice place, one day to see the Duomo, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele
and Leonardo's Last Supper. You have to make resvation in advance to
see the Last supper, so make them before you leave on vacation If you
are looking to relax go to Lake Como and hour by train from Milan. Relax
in a very colorful area of Italy. Plenty of places to photograph.

Rome - You could spend three weeks in Rome. There is so much
to see and do.

1 - The fountains in Rome, Pizza Navona, Pizza Della Rotonda, Piazza della
Repubblica and Trevi Fountain. All the fountains are works of art. I wish I
included the fountain in front of the Spanish Step but I think the main
attraction is to be there.

2 - The Vatican Museum - Go there early and hour before it open, there
will already be a line. Also you have to check you bags in, so except to
carry your camera, some lens and extra memory in your hands. They do
not permit flash to be used in the museum. If you are going to take my
advice and see the Sistine Chapel, that should be the first thing you
should see. It is hard walking through the museums and not stopping
to see the things found there. But see the ceiling and then spend time
at your own pace seeing the rest of the museum and photographing it.
That way you are not inline with the tour groups that are "all" there
to see the Sistine Chapel.

3 - St Peter Church. Again you have to check in your bags, but you can
use flash inside the church. Also make sure to go to the top St Peter's
bell tower for the best views of Rome.

4 - The Coliseum - Get there before it opens and you will be able to take
photos without tourist in them. Within 1/2 hour all the tour groups will
show up and mob the place. The only photos you will get is of tourist
or people holding umbrellas straight up. Best place for photographs is on
the second landing, there is a balcony.

5 - The Capitonline Museum: Palazzo dei Conservatori at Piazza del
Campidoglio - Fantastic museum to photograph. Again you have to check
you bags in, I do not recall is flash can be used. 1/2 day visit it is worth
while. Also you can get to excellent photos of the Coliseum and forum
from there.

Venice - All of Venice is a work of art and the best walking city in
the world.

1 - San Giorgio Maggiore's bell tower, is the best place to get photos of
Venice. Everyone goes to the one at San Marco, but this bell tower is
the one where you can really capture much of Venice in a photograph.
Best is hardly anyone goes there and you can have the whole tower for
yourself. Do both bell towers and you can decide for yourself.

2 - The islands in the Lagoon, Murano, Torcello and especially Burano.
Just taking the boat out there is fun and you can take many photos.
Make sure you go to Burano with the multicolor houses. I was there
during wash day still got some very exciting photos.

3 - Grab a map and walk the back alleys of Venice. My most interesting
photos of Venice are from the back alleys, Venice has 198 churchs, small
stores, canals, bridges and so on, you will take tons of photos.

4 - Ride Vaporetto #1 down the Grand Canal. Get a unique view of
Venice from the Grand Canal.

Florence - Is like a major city, but with a history, character and art that
makes it a very special city in the world

1 - Michelangelo's David and the Uffizi museum. While they do not permit
cameras, it is a must see. Reservations are needed to enter, so make
them before you leave on vacation.

2 - The Duomo and Campanile. The Campanile is nice to take photos from,
but is has a chicken wire fence. The top of the Duomo, is higher than
the Campanile and no chicken wire fence. From the top of the Duomo
you have a spectator view of Florence. Sorry to say to visit to Campanile,
top of the Duomo and inside of the Duomo required an entrance fee for
each one. Same chuch, but you have to pay three times! I felt I was
mugged by the church.

3 - Palazzo Vecchio - Great place to photograph Florence's city hall and
they have some beautiful statues at the entrance. Also make sure you
have your camera, while much of the museum you cannot photograph.
There is on the top floor, is a outdoor café. Great place to take some
more photographs.

4 - Boboli Garden - Relax and photograph many of the statues and
gardens found there.

5 - Piazzale Michelangelo - Another great place to relax, but more
importantly a great place to capture much of Florence in one photograph.

Places that you did list but I can recommend.

Siena - A very beautiful hill town in Tuscany and a must see. They have
a bell tower that is worth the climb for a very special view and is hour
from Florence by bus.

Pisa - Everyone know about the Leaning Tower, but most to not know
of the beautiful church that is right next to it and the very interesting
cemetery. To climb the bell tower you need reservations so make them
before you go. Also an hour by train from Florence.

Pompeii - While not much is standing a very interest place and lots of
things to photograph. I manage to take some photos murals on the wall
that date back to the time before the destruction of Pompeii took place.
If it is hot day, buy some bottle water before you walk in. The place
is large and only one place sells water and there are few water fountains.
I found people leaving because they were thristy.

Well this is all I can think of off the top of my head. I will be revisiting
Italy this coming May. Rome again for a few days, seeing more of
Siena. Most of all I am renting a car for a week to visited and
photograph the small towns in Tuscany and it's famous countryside.
So at the end of May I should have more ideas what to see and do.

As a Rome citizen, I can't help but agreeing with you. While in Rome, you could visit the little sorrounding towns like Tivoli and Frascati or the ruins of Ostia. It's also a great idea to visit Tuscany.. I think I'll spend my summer holidays in Grosseto.

As someone living in Vienna and truly loving this city i have to clear up some points.

Vienna ISNT the most expensive of the big cities. According to this statistic i have found it is on place 14 for the costs of a shorttrip.

http://focus.msn.de/D/DR/DRT/DRT04/DRT04B/drt04b.htm?order=3
(Its in German but you should get the meening right)

London, Paris, Zurich, Stockholm and Genf are more expensive (just to name the european ones)

As in most other bigger cities parking can be a bit of a problem. But you can park although you will have to pay for it in the inner districts in the time between 8am-8pm.

Anybody (me too) has to pay for using the highways in austria. But all other roads are free. But there is only one highway going right through vienna which you can use but dont have too.

Besides that there is a quite good net of public transport in vienna.

Vienna is definitly not ugly - even if this is a VERY subjectiv statement.

Maybe its not as clean as some swiss cities or singapore - but its not more dirty than most of the other big cities in europe.

AND - whats maybe most important for you - vienna has got a lot of very nice old buildings - perfect if you go on a photographic trip.

Seems to me that Hartmut has made some bad experiences here in vienna. I am sorry for that. But believe me - most of the tourists coming to vienna like what they see.

have a nice trip and take good pictures
Konrad

... be sure that you spend a few days/nites there. I've been there twice, for a week each time. It is a photographer's dream. My wife calls Venice the 'Shooting fish in a barrel' city, with reference to picture taking.

I would just caution you against going into Venice for a 'day-trip'. Several of my friends have gone to Venice for a one-day'er, getting in around 10 and leaving by 4 in the afternoon. They've all come back saying that the city is crowded and dirty. I tell everyone that to enjoy Venice you must be there at 6 in the morning when St. Mark's square is empty (except for 3 or 4 other photographers), and at 8:00 in the evening, when the 3 or 4 piece orchestras play outside of the coffee shops.

Plan on filling up a CF card in St. Mark's square, taking pix of the kids chasing the pigeons (sorry, in the Square they're called 'doves'), the church and the Doge's palace. Walk down the small streets, shooting the gondola's coming around the corners.

You'll need to plan on a day in beautiful, and very colorful Burano, and give your wife a shopping (for glass) day on the island of Murano.

Venice is definitely one of the prettiest and photogenic cities in all of Europe. The people are wonderful, and the wine is amazing.

Venice should be number 1 on your Italian list.

Enjoy,
