Somebody offers me a new Nikon D1x at USD600. I have sent my assistant (a hobbyist photographer too) to check on the camera, and he confirmed that the offer is legit.

I am waiting for a Digital SLR that uses full frame simply because I just realised that I am too stupid to (re-)start studying about change of DOF caused by the smaller sensor (Don't LAUGH!).

So.... buy or not?

$hit, $600 for a working D1x, I would buy it in a heartbeat! If you don't want it, let me get it!

Is it a US camera? If so, and your assistant has verified it, there's is no way you should pass this up!

the offer is legit.
The,ahem, "offer" may be legitimate,as in the sense that there's somebody willing to sell you or anybody else a Nikon D1x for $600. However,at US $600, it's almost certainly a stolen camera.

The price seems almost too good to be true, and there's a reason for that I think, and I suspect you know it too.

It is truly unbelievable how many people there are, who initiate ( or respond enthusiastically) to idiotic posts like this. I suppose it is just possible that the incensed wife of one of you "tech heads" has found the D1X you had hidden in your closet and decided to teach you a lesson by selling your forbidden toy for 20% of it's new cost. However, it is far more likely that it is "stolen goods". (as someone who has lost a D1 to "sticky" fingers I do not smile about such "Steals" )

Why not ask if they have another one - then, when you have to send the first one in for it's eventual trip to Nikon service - and they impound it ( see the thread on Rob Galbraith's forum ...) you will still have the spare to play with...

Amazing how greed can suspend all rational thought in some people...

I am in Jakarta, Indonesia, and I am meeting the seller today. Will let you guys know by 1200GMT today, whether to tell you what's wrong with the camera or just to show off my new D1x :p

Bram

Thanks for your response Ian,

Unfortunately I have been living in an "ideal" world and never thought of the possibility of someone selling a stolen camera. Your post opens up my mind, will check it today. I will not buy any stolen goods in any form.

Bram
PS: But I do mind you saying that my original post is an idiotic post.

The seller admitted that he got it from someone who used someone else's credit card number to buy the camera from a store.

Not buying such thing, I am.

IMHO, you should not only not buy the camera, you should notify the competent authorities in your area and get this rabble off the street and behind bars. Evil triumphs when good men do nothing.

29 lbs. of Canon stuff in a backpack that I carry everywhere. A closet full of things that are banned in Britain. A minivan and a Fender Stratocaster. A three bedroom ranch with three owls on an acre. An aversion to rumours. Also, absolutely no Canon 1200mm f/5.6. Yet.
