Is 4/3 inch a diagonal measurement?

Pardon me if this has already been answered, but what exactly does 4/3 inch refer to? A side of the sensor, or a diagonal? My E 20 is 2/3, so is the 4/3 going to be twice the size, or four times the size? And how does that compare to the Fuji S2 and Nikon D100?

And will they ever get 20 Meg on that size sensor? (if 20 is the number that gets digital into the range of film)
Thanks,
George

To answer my own question, I just read another post that has some of the answers. Go to

http://www.dp-now.com/archives/000020.html

and it explains the whole 4/3 thing. It seems that 4/3 is an aspect ratio. The exact size of the chip is 13.5 mm by 18 mm. The pixel count won't be out till June 24. The camera will be out in the fall. (Famous last words?)

Here's what you do:-

The E-20 does pictures 256 x 1920 So divide the bigger by the smaller number and you get 1·333333. Or four thirds. Usually written as 4:3 or 3:4 which is the aspect ratio. The E-10 comes out as 4:3 also. It's a popluar size and the paper you print them on is 8" x 10" which is 4:5 so you waste some...

Confusing isn't it?

This has been spelled out in many posts over the past couple of years. The so-called 4/3 standard refers specifically to the sensor size (using the sizing convention described in Phil's notes on CCD sizing - the old vidicon tube jazz in which the diagonal in MILLIMETERS is found by multiplying the size in INCHES by 16 - how's that for obscure). It just happens that the aspect ratio is also 4/3 but that's not the basis of the definition of the 4/3 standard. Hope this has clarified rather than made it sound even more obscure. :-)

...So we're talking quality which may surpass the E 20 by a long shot,
maybe enough to do major enlargements of landscapes!

But this isn't new is it? Was it 5 or 6 years ago that the latest BMW was announced and there was a fuss made because the posters on billboards were digitally shot? I think the camera cost more than the car, so perhaps there's something for a few of us to look forward to... :-)
