PPPFFFFFTTT, your honour my computer was hacked by a chicken ... :-)

If you don't think that people from Fuji read this board, then you
are almost certainly wrong.

Still, by not actually contacting them outright, it may be possible
to maintain "plausible deniability".
However, lots of times there are enthusiasts inside the company who
really, deep down inside, wouldn't mind if certain things "just
happened". Without any involvement on the part of Fuji or any
employees (of course).

If Fuji made it open source ....
They don't have to - Xbox hacking project is on SourceForge, so could this (eventually) be - after all we're not forced to use pSOS unless there are some technical issues.
Sales of the camera would go through the roof
Tech support and warranty cost would also go through the roof
Hehe - they wouldn't mind, since each flashed camera would be with voided warranty, repairs could bring more profit for Fuji.
Of course, parts of the firmware are licensed and Fuji can't make
it open source even if they want to.
Perhaps some variant of micro Linux kernel would fit in the camera. This way we'd only need to figure out all the ports, switches, servos and stuff, copycat important things like SuperCCD processing, and then the fun would really begin...

Well it's started,

unfortunately my cool idea of connecting a web-camera live turned out crappy so I'll pick up a DC tomorrow and post better pics.

In a nutshell, first sections were easy, now I've trying to find 2 secret catches. 1 seems to be under the Flash after it pops, other one is elusive, so far ...
Full of custom IC's, so no way to see what they do, not really important.

One problem solved already, I found ALL the sand that was missing from the motorcross meets I shot !!! Not "that" well sealed ... grrrrrr

If you ever have trouble with the lens zoom etc, removing the front LENS cover is easy, 3 screws, and quite safe. Just be gentle, naturally.

Will continue tomorrow. Its 1am here. Hmmm might just replace that crappy little speaker with a nice BOSE ....

On your page you have put that all the screws that hold the back cover on are the same size except 1, yes they are all the same length except that 1, but the screw in the memory card bay is a self tapper screw unlike all the others (found this out when trying to put them back in).

Thanks, As an old disiple of "ZEN and the art of motorcycle maintenance", I has "tagged" and taped each screw in a folder. I intend to provide ALL details (threads etc) once I've stripped it down. How far did U get it apart? I'm stuck on the 2nd secret "catch".

Hi jkirk,
I think you are a 602 pioneer. All the best and good luck for you.

Thaaaaaaaaaanks for sharing.

I had the camera plugged in.
My uneducated guess is, that perhaps it won't flash if for example
camera is on battery power - people at service would rather use
external power supply. Power failure during flashing would be quite
painfull, and batteries are more likely to fail than your power
plant, especially if you are using UPS. We'll know for sure when
someone will get the access to right tools, allowing to analyse
just Fuji's code, not the entire OS.

Think nothing of it, I'm just nuts. Stalled now for 4 hrs, next part will NOT come apart ... time to stop, I'm starting to act out scenes from Blazing saddles ...

Mongo very angry ... Mongo not happy with cammie ... Mongo tell cammie, she not open up ... then Mongo go fetch Dremmel ... Mongo sleep now , cammie better be good tomorrow.

Gidday,
for someone that is "new" here you have found the holy grail.
Now... who's willing to hack the firmware and add some features like...

-Bulb Shutter Mode
-Zoom in Movie Mode
-Display Custom White Balance in EVF
-ISO to be displayed on EVF
-When switching between ISO settings, the camera retains the quality settings
-Shift menu to switch media slots
-Quick Review option as implemented on Kodak cameras
-You press the "left" button to bring up the previously shot pic
-White Balancing in Movie Mode

I would pay for a custom firmware!!! well... of course not too $$$.

perhaps this link might help
http://www.geocities.com/theolumens/uitelkaar.html
it's about the disassembly of a fuji 4900/6900

How about background image queuing and buffer processing - until there is still space in the buffer (which holds 5 full size images), I would be very happy to have ability of shooting another frame without waiting for compressing previous one. For example, when I shot the image, camera stops working on last one, adds new image to queue and continues the work. After each photo unused buffer should be freed to allow maximum memory usage. That would make it bit closer to film SLR's, and make the camera feel 'faster', more responsive.
Here's what I would like to be added in a "tweaked" firmware:

Even though I rate that as Difficulty Lvl_5.0, it IS MY TOP PRIORITY. Especially when using RAW mode. It is soooo stupid having a 96MB buffer and having to wait 'cause 1 lousy SHOT is still in it !! One wedding I did, where I had to do a lot of PORTRAITS, It pi* ed me off so bad. I have no issues with ANY other "minor" annoyances BUT this one steams me up :-)

I only took the back off as when my camera turned up through the post (US import) the LCD screen on the back was at an angle, so I took the back off to clip the screen back into its mountings. Had no reason to go any further.

Good Luck
