I've owned two laptop computers
" " three PC's

hmmm..... am I a toy junkie....? I'd say definitely not. Now, I have 3 networked computers, but they all serve my needs - even the 3 year old. I don't have a DVD player, my newest tv is 10 years old, and I've never even bought a VCR (although we have 3). My first real CD player was in 96 (someone gave us a real cheapo in 94).

I like certain gadgets, and I did buy a new pocketPC when they came out, but that was about the extent of my gadgetry. The photo thing came about by accident, and I'm a little bit of a freak about wanting more equipment in that area, but that's about the extent of my freakishnesh.

As asides, I've never seen an episode of Star Trek, I've spent more on vacations than I have on technology, and my kitchen is the most outdated on the block. Oh, and the first time I joined an Internet forum was STF. But, I was checking the weather on Prodigy in 1991 with a 1200 baud modem. I was the coolest guy in grad school. Big whoop. haha.

So, my list isn't even worth mentioning.

And the funny thing is my career has been spent in high-tech companies in the fastest moving technologies. But - I use them relevantly. I think.

I think I'm more like Shutter than the toy junkie. In certain areas, like computers or digital cameras, I like to splurge a little. But not too much...

I don't have zillions of gadgets, and those I do have, I use. Or I quickly try to sell it off if I realize its not being used (before the value of it drops precipitously), like my Palm Pilot that just sat there.

Me? Not really. Here's my stupid home setup http://www.emnme.com/morelaptop.htm (One minidDV cam, two DSC, 3 LT, nice mobile, expensive softwares oops is Adobe PS not a toy? )

Normally for new things, I buy them and use them for a month. After which I sell them to my friends at a discounted rate of course. But not my DSC - it's not a love at first sight kind of relationship (unlike for laptops and other gadgets). You really play with DSCs and it takes time to get that special bonding...

Cheers!

Not at all.

I usually use my PC's for 4 to 5 years.
I have a VHS , but it is the cheapest one I could find, no thrills.
TV is 8 years old, non digital, non 100 Hz, no widescreen.
Stereo is 8 as well, no surround etc.
I bought my F707 last year after 20 years of fully manual SLR.
I don't have an MP3 player or anything like it.
No DVD.
Privat mobile phone is approx. 5 years old, the first one we bought.

I bought a small digitial video camera, but only after my 10 years old video-8 camera broke down.

O.K. I owned an Apple Newton once (remember those : a BIG Palm!!) but bought it only went they went on sale at end of life.
And I bought an electronic saxofoon once, with MIDI interface, just for fun,

I usually keep all techno stuff until it breaks down or becomes unworkable.

But more and more, if I buy something new, I am prepared to spend and buy good quality.

In my work I used a laptop and Palm and mobile phone, but no other gadgets, just standard productivity tools.

I also need a critical, no gadget attitude in my job as CIO, I get bombardet with new gadget info, need to look at opportunities they give, but also control costs.....

Funn topic Mark.

Everyone has a right to be stupid. Some just abuse the privilege. (Unknown)

Selective junkie: My drugs are computers and digicam paraphenalia. Computers...
  • 4 desktop computers
  • 3 laptop computers
  • Newest toy: 2.4GHz P4 with 15" TFT, 512MB memory, yadda yadda
  • 2 Linux servers (built from scrapheap parts)
  • Sun Solaris workstation (inherited)
  • 5 of these still in operation
  • Blended network of 802.11b wireless and 100MB switched ethernet
  • LAN jacks in every room of the house
  • Broadband terminating on a residential gateway
  • 4 printers, 2 still in operation (Eppy 785EPX for photos)
  • 2 flatbed scanners
  • Unthinkable number of subordinate toys
Digicam stuff, all in the last 14 months...
  • 3 digicams (Oly C3000Z, 707, 717)
  • Sold two of 'em, though :-)
  • Promaster 5750DX with Sony and manual modules
  • HVL-F1000
  • Vivitar 2800
  • RM-DR1
  • 50' of extension cable for both ACC and AV-out ports
  • 6-pack of memory sticks
  • 3 cases/bags + backpack
  • 3 tripods (micro, medium, full-tilt)
Fun topic. Frightening if one tallies up the $$ while typing. Your use of the term "junkie" was quite insightful.

In a way, yes... but my big thing is computers. I can't even remember how many I've had in the past (most of them being recycled by giving to friends or family) and we now have a network of three plus two laptops in the house (not being used, however). We also have 4 TVs in the house and one outside by the pool, as well as two small stereo systems and two component systems with CD changers (one out by the pool). I have never seen a palm pilot, don't have a cell phone or pager, and have never played Nintendo or the like :)

I also have a stack of 8 firewire CD burners -- but these are for business, not for play! Oh, and my firewire hard drive. Really wonder how I lived without that for so long.

But as for always having to buy the new item that comes out, no. I shop and consider my purchases for some time before jumping in and I don't always feel the need to have the latest. However, if I decide on something I really want, I go for it! My favorite camera is 2 1/2 years old and although I've bought two others since, it's still probably my favorite piece of electronics that I own. But man, am I addicted to the computers...

Thanks for the interesting thread, Mark. As usual, I hope I didn't give too much information into my strange little world ;)

When you get to be as ooooolllldddd as I am (60) you lose count. My husband got our first computer as an IBM employee for $3K. It didn't even have a disk, just a floppy. That was in 1982. Can't count how many computers since then... couple of lap tops, maybe 10 IBM compatible between us and now I have a G4 MAC sitting next to my PC. Haven't bought a lot of perriferals though... two scanners I think and maybe five printers over the years.

Cameras... whooo boy! That all began in earnest when my dad gave me a Kodak Retina when I was 14. Been through a bunch o Canon SLRs including two ftBs and and A1. Then tried APS cameras and found all of them to be sorely lacking and finally got into digital with an early Sony Mavica. Next came the Sony S70 and that was the end of film cameras for me. Got a 707 and sold it and got a 717 when they came out. Looking for a purse camera I briefly owned a Konica - strong but useless for taking picutes except in bright daylight. Got a Canon S45 which now rides around with me but soon expect to succumb to the lure of the V1 and will probabaly sell the Canon and get the V1. I won't get a DSLR until they come out with a lighter, smaller one that catches my fancy. :)

As to other technology, cell phones do nothing for me. I have one clunker that I only use for emergencies. I like good hifi equipment and have dropped some bucks on some really good speakers (Klipsche La Scalla, midrange and surround) and have a decent sound system.

Now, were I richer the story would probably be more decadant. ;) Ann
