I asked this in another forum. The answers I'm getting so far are interesting and educational and entertaining enough that I thought I'd post here, too.

Given the choice, which of the following would you rather go with?

a) Canon D30 for around $1,000
b) Canon 10D for around $1,500
c) some other make/model dSLR at any price
d) I'll avoid the dSLR like the plague for now

Although it would mean switching from my Nikon film slr system. For now I am fighting the urge to preorder the D10... but I will probably be able to stand the long wait until Photokina. My G2 should tide me over until then.

b.

10D for sure. I won't pay more than 700 for the D30, more than 1000 for D60. If you give me that kind of choice, it would be harder to answer.

My 1+ year G2 will satisfy my photographic needs for at least another year (maybe less if something really exciting turns up this Fall, like a 5-6x zoom G4). The rumoured $1,500 price tag for the 10D is a good sign of where things are headed down the road. Maybe a $1,000 DSLR with even more improved features in 2 years? It isn't hard to imagine given what we've seen just over a short span of time starting with the D30, D60 and now 10D. I'll ride this one out and just watch all the excitement unfold. I have no need for a DSLR right now but my photo needs might change in 2 years time.

By the time I master my G3 the 10D will be going for a couple hundred bucks so at that price I'd go for the 10D:)

Same goes for my S30 but there is one thing that only DSLR can help, DOF. This is the only reason I would go for a DSLR, the larger sensor thus the wider control of DOF. No matter how good in terms of feature of the prosumer models, even if they fix all the AF problems, the DOF is still the Archilles heel.

I agree with the sentiment, but I doubt that we'll actually see it happen for quite a while. The D30 is difficult to find for under $1000 even on ebay. I can't imagine the D60 dropping THAT low even in six months. It's going to be a long, long while yet.

I'll use my G3 for another year or so, but build my Canon EF lens range up in the meantime (as I have an EOS 300). By then the successor to the 10D should be out, and this time next year should see some really great prices on DSLRS

10D for US$1500 for sure!

You are probably right.
But what about you? Are you considering one of the named bodies?

Doesn't the 10D sound close to perfect? cheaper than D60, solves the most annoying problem of D60, the AF-performance and even improves noise....

Cheers,

I'd rather wait till a 1D is affordable for me. But now I'm happy with my G3 and a 10-years old olmpus SLR.

Both the 10D and the Pentax *ist D give me pause for thought.

But the prices are still not low enough in my mind to break real barriers. You're still paying a lot for the body and the same old premium for the lenses. Total cost of ownership is still going to put you up at $2000.

Since I'm also experimenting with selling my work these days, I can see it being "worth" it. Of course, for the enthusiast, no price is really too high. For the dabbler in photography, however, the costs are just not attractive enough.

I don't think the general public will buy into the dSLR until the magic point of $1000 is broken.

Heheh... that's a loaded question. No camera is perfect. :-)

And pixel for pixel, I'd like to see how an improved Foveon sensor would stack up against this one. Actually, Phil has already laid some of the groundwork for research here.

well, since I am already sold into the EOS system with several EF lenses (50/1.8, 28-135IS, and 200L2.8) the temptation is strong for me this time.

As long as the 10D lives up to the picture quality of the D60 and the AF Performance of the EOS30/Elan7 it provides as much as I will demand for the next 5 years at least.

Taking into account what I will save in film, developing and scanning cost..... oh no It comes over me again ;-))

The D10D at $1500 is getting tempting.

I have shot 11,000 pics with my Canon G1, still a great little camera.
But I have to consider the cost for:

DSLR Advantages to me:
1. 6.3 mp for more detail in my pics
2. Much higher iso for low light without flash.
3. More lens options
4. Faster response for action shots

DSLR Disadvantages:

1. No preview lcd with swingle-out capability, important for my industrial applications in awkward positions.
2. It is heavy and bulky for long travel trips to carry.
3. The good lenses are expensive and more to worry about.

4. More difficult to be inconspicuous taking pictures in public places, like churches and museums.

Thanks, you helped me be more objective.

The survey doesn't specify if this would be a replacement to your current camera. Personally, I really love my G2, and would want it for less demanding shooting, etc. Carrying around all that $$$ can be intimidating.

Before the 10D came out I was waiting for a $1000 DSLR with similar features and quality to the current $2k DSLRs. Now that a 10D at $1500 is going to be available soon, I have to change the way I have been thinking about this.

I have no digital camera at all right now. Assuming PMA doesn't produce a camera closer to my price range (and frankly I prefer a Canon, anyway), do I want to wait 6-9 months for the next camera? A used D60 (if I could find one) would be in my price range, but I also consider how long it would be until I wanted to buy a replacement DSLR. For the extra $500 a 10D would probably last me an extra 9 months or more over a D60. Also, if I wait to buy, I'd probably want a cheap DP&S; but why not put that money toward the 10D and get it now?

By watching the cost of the high end DP&Ss (darn they're expensive!), I have to conclude that the low-end Canon DSLR's (with features like the current $2k DSLRs) aren't going to get down to $1000 for longer than I want to wait.

So I have a feeling I'll be ordering a 10D even though it is 50% more than I wanted to spend (and I want to get a $420 lens as well; ugh). I will wait until all the prepurchases have been filled by people that will test the 10D and post reviews on it for me :-)

I will probably go with the 10D since I have saved up $2500.00 in my photo account. This will give me the camera and two good Canon lenses.
