Looks like the Digital Pentax SLR comes in black. There's a Press release in English on the site too.

Along with the *ist D, PENTAX announces an exciting wide angle lens for 35mm AF
SLR cameras, the smc PENTAX-FA J Zoom 18-35mm F4-5.6 AL.

Right on. Black it is for me.

It's amazing what a difference color makes. I first noticed it on the Minolta 7i. I hated the silver 7i, but I think the 7HI looks very cool. I didn't dislike the old chrome metal body cameras as much -- stuff like the Pentax Spotmatic, even Nikon FTN looked good in chrome. But plastic silver cameras -- yuck.

Looking at the black Pentax DSLR, I can't say it looks any less attractive than the D60.

All it needs is a little black paint to cover up that dorky name. Jeez they even made the * red so it would stand out.

Heh! I blacktape the brand and model names on all my cameras anyway. Pentax could call this one "Our Marketing Dept. Is Smoking Crack" and no-one would know it from my sample. :-)

On a more practical note, covering up the brand & model names can make the camera less attractive to potential thieves.

I like the black too... but I have another observation here.

As I look at this picture carefully, I notice that the new 18-35 FA lens does not have an aperture ring like other AF Pentax lenses ... This seems to me that Pentax is following the "G" direction of Nikon. Anybody care to comment?

In the press release on the Pentax USA site, they refer to the new lens as "the smc PENTAX-FA J Zoom." You can see the "J" on the lens too. Maybe that's the designation for a new no-aperture ring lens series?

In either case, this 18mm is going to be a real problem for wide-angle photographers. The 1.5x crop gives you an effective focal length of 27mm... even the standard zooms on film SLRs can give you something wider.

On second thought, though, anyone who desperately needs a wide-angle lens for their profession would probably be willing to pay a couple thousand more for a 1D or 1Ds.

Only the 1Ds will give you really wide angles of view. The 1D has a larger sensor than the *ist D but you still get 1.3x magnification compared to 35mm. So an 18mm lens becomes an effective 23.4mm.

I'll probably end up getting a fisheye lens if I buy an *ist D. Pentax makes an interesting fisheye zoom actually. I like the 20-25mm range with my 35mm cameras, and there's some neat software available that will make rectilinear images out of fisheye shots with minimal fuss.
