hello all,

want to share my last experiences with Pbase. everybody can have a distint point of view, but there are a couple of occurences worth to be published.

Pbase changed over to a paysite - all we know that. well, no problem at all - a good service has to be paid for.
BUT - here are my personal complaints:

they want to be a professional paysite, but are obviously completely unable to implement a credit card option.

staying with only PayPal is RIDICULOUS! everybody(??) knows, that PayPal works only in a couple of countries - US of course. but there are STILL MANY other countries all over the world besides the US, where PayPal does NOT work! don´t speak now from checks - i NEVER would send any check by mail! nowadays we are in 2003 (really???) - there is no need anymore sending checks by mail! but all ok again, if they do´nt provide the user a possibility to pay for the service (how professional they are - aren´t they?), i will change to another - more professional - service with at least a credit card option.

but here is much more, what REALLY annoys me:

1. they NEVER informed (usually per email) their costumers, announcing the important changes. this is not only unprofessional, but also a felt of respect. any information on the main site is NOT sufficient. usually the user never logs into his galleries, going through the main site.

2. without ANY preannouncement, they cut the upload! they NEVER, NEVER informed about a new implemented "trial", limited to 10 Mb. now look here, i am not even able to delete a gallery to get under this limit. because of some server/software problems they have had 2 or 3 weeks ago, a complete gallery is undeletable! maybe their right as the owner to cut me off, but he has to give me at least ANY chance to pay, all other behavior is UNFAIR. and they are unable to implement an international pay-service, at least they should PREANNOUNCE this incovinient to all users, to give them time enough finding an alternative site for their images.

i´m deeply disappointed with the UNGENTLEMENLY and UNFAIR treatment from Pbase. how Pbase treats his users is impertinent!

they completely forgot, that WE USERS made Pbase what it is today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i´m deleting now my galleries on Pbase and i´m searching for a good alternative. any recommendation would be highly appreciated. the costs are tangential for me. i need a PROFESSIONAL host, where costumers are treated with respect and not like homeless mendicants. a maximum of 50 MB space would be ok, but with CREDIT CARD OPTION!

i say it here again and very explicit: I WILL PAY - BUT THEY DON´T LET ME DO SO!!
IT´S RIDICULOUS..... RIDICULOUS..... RIDICULOUS......!
and all this happens in the worldleader-(?????)country.
  • shame on you Pbase!

hello all,
Hello,

Being in a somewhat similar situation as Slug, perhaps I can offer some insight.

First, the movement to a paid service has been posted on the pbase front page since December 23, 2002. I am amazed it has taken so long for Slug to move to a paid system. The amount of voluntary support of the site is disgracefuly small. Most of the users seem to think the world owes them gallery space.

Second, setting up credit card billing is complicated and expensive. For places where PayPal is not availble, money orders would seem to offer a reasonable solution. Has Slug refused to accept money orders?

Third, permissions on database access is not a simple subject. I'm not sure exactly what your problem might be with not being able to delete albums, but I've been able to resolve several problems by exchanging eMails with Slug. Has he refused to work with you?

Nothing is difficult for the person who does not have to do it. Running a web hosting system is not a trivial task. Slug has done an excellent, and in most cases thankless, job. He is having growing and reconfiguration problems, but with a little patience, he will probably get it figured out.

I agree with Hugh 100%. I run a non-profit for individuals like myself that have a rare non-curable muscle disease which offers support and tries to raise research funds for a cure. We are 100% volunteer (no salaries here). A lot of people complain about things they want from a site or organization, but when it comes to asking them for help not many come forward and that is dissapointing. People complained about our organization not being able to take credit card donations when we asked for donations to raise resarch funds because we did not have that capability and it was very exspensive and we did not want any research dollars that we raised going to a monthly credit card processing fee. We told them that we would accept all other forms of payment. We since then have found another non-profit organization that gets major corporations to absorb the credit card processing fees for organizations like ours that are trying to do some good in this world. I feel in these times that we have much more important things to complain about other than not being able to take credit card transactions or not being notified by e-mail about a change to a FREE service. SLUG could have been real rude and locked out all non payers immediatley but that waws not done. If you had read the PBase main page you would have been more in touch with what was going on. I do not mean to to be rude to you but cut the guy some slack here. He has given a great service for free for a long time. So what if now he wants to charge and offset some of his costs and maybe make a little for himself. All things take time and sometimes that time can be a bit longer with limited resources at hand. Just my 2 cents worth.

PBase is awesome! I've tried several different services that just do not compare. I think Slug deserves a pat on the back for the outstand job he is doing. BTW, I am a supporter and as a supporter I'm all for limiting space and bandwidth for folks who do not pay for what ever reason, maybe more effort on your part would have facilitated a resolution of all your issues.

I am happy to pay and did! I think it is a great SITE..AND ALL SITES HAVE BUGS AND PROBLEMS. I hope the bugs that are getting to you get squashed soon! As for e mails..I did expect one telling me of the change too...but I understand that the email list may be more then anyone over there has time to deal with. They dont send any spam e mail or monthly newsletters so I am sure they are not set up to send out mass emailing. But I was aware of the change because it was posted long ago. Hope it all gets worked out for you.

Dago: This might not be the best solution for everyone, but if you have the ability to pay, why don't you get yourself some webspace and use it to host your own site for your photos? That's what I do, and thus am not limited by the same size and bandwidth rules.
