1D good or no good?

Previously I heard that 1D had some quality problems with the actual hardware. Is it true?

1D users: Do you feel the machine is durable and much better than D30/60?

Sorry for asking such open ended questions. But I'm itching for the 1.3 factor which will help my wide angle shots.....and 1Ds is TOO expensive.

The hardware problem (an initial bug) was solved long ago.

You won't regret a 1D.

Do a search on E-bay for EOS-1D, and order one of the deals from Cameta.

I'm a not sports type. I heard that the noise level is a tad bit higher than D30/60, is that correct?

The difference is more like a sqush, not a tad.
but could be a negative sqush.

The more things change, the more things change

Going from a DC4800 to a Pro90 to a D30, I thought the D30 had worse output than my other cameras as far as color and sharpness. It took about 2 weeks to really get hit hard by how much better then D30 was in most every respect than my previous digicams.

Moving from the D30 to a 1D, I was again initially disappointed. But as time goes by I am utterly amazed at the 1D's capabilities. Is is necessary for a pro or amateur to have a 1D? Of course not. But it is better in most every way. The noise seems worse at ISO 200 at first glance, but when you realize that it is so much sharper out of the camera than the D30 (and possibly D60) you quickly forget what might be construed as "higher noise". I think the noise level is truly amazing on the 1D for being so low, especially at higher ISO's.

Bottom line is I think experience with a qaulity tool gives you time to appreciate its often subtle superior nature (once again, not to bash D30/D60 in anway way - I absolutely have the highest regard for those tools).

The D30 looks/feels/handles like a toy compared to the 1D. Once you hold one, you're sold. The 1D is very durable, and best used for sports & photo journalism. If you don't need it for either of these, it might not be the right camera for you. If you want to do mostly wide angle work, you might want to save up the extra pennies for the 1Ds --- 4MP works great with a long lens for newspapers and magazines, but if you're going to be doing big finearts quality wide angle prints, 4MP might not be enough to resolve the detail you're looking for. You should get some very good 8x10 wide angle prints from the 1D..... you could go higher, but anything significantly higher than 8x10 is out of the 1D's domain if you're really picky about image quality. Keep in mind that I've done some great 16x20 prints with the 1D, but they were sports shots...... not highly detailed wide angle photos.

Hello Board!!! This is my first time posting a message. It feels good to be part of the BELIEVERS (for Canon). I think the 1D produces great images past 16x20 (if you are "forced" to go up in size). I have seen up to 30x40. True, it is not as "sharp" as you may prefer but suprisingly good image quality exists at this level. If you dont already know, check out Ed Pierce's digital seminar if it comes near your town. It compared Film to the D60, 1D, 1Ds, Hassy H1 with kodak back, and the 14n. Quite interesting. I was not too impressed with the hassy or the digi back nor was I impressed with the 14n pics. I would really like to get a 1D for my wedding photojournalism. CAN'T WAIT FOR MY TAX RETURN!!! :O)

The 1D is great, and the 1.3x really helps if you like to shoot wide. Largest I've printed is 13x19 with NO complaints at all. The 1D is much more than just a sports or wildlife cam. I find it perfect for landscape photography, and check out the threads both here and at robgalbraith from fashion photographers in love with the 1D.
