I'm ready to get the Canon 200mm 2.8L prime lens.
It will primarely be used for wildlife shots.
I 'm also considering ordering the Canon 2X extender with it.
Feedback from anyone using this combination would be appreciated.

If there is a better choice in the same price range, I would like to hear about it.

Thanks

If you consider a 400mm F2.8 as a superior lens to the 200 f2.8, then take note. If you are going to use the 200 with 2x all the time , get the 400 f5.6 as it performs identically to the 400 f2.8 but is two stops slower. ie 5.6 and it only costs £1000 ($1600 equivalent). I have this lens and it is brill and easy to handle. Try it out at a cam store near you and see what it can do for you.

The Canon 200mm/2.8L is one of my favorite lenses, and I've used it with a 2x TC to shoot large birds. In my experience, the 2xTC causes noticeable softening when compared to the razor sharp quality of the prime alone. That said, I am very happy with the quality of the shots I got, since I don't shoot at 400mm often enough to justify the purchase of a 400mm prime.

I think the 200mm prime is a great choice, and very versatile with the 1.4x and 2x TCs. Also, the Mk I lens on the used market is probably the best value in L glass that you could find.

Please explain bumping and why I can't.
Thanks

Thanks for the input.

If I use the 200 f2.8 with the 2x wouldn't I still have the equivalent of a 400 f5.6 lens?
Will the quality be significantly lower than the 400 f5.6?

that's what I meant, I use the 400mm f5.6 on my D60 (previously EOS5) and optically gives the same performance as the 400m f2.8. Go for the prime w/o converter, would be sharper I am sure. See some of my pics at pbase.com. look for eoslensman, that's me !
