Just as a point of clarification. If the 10D's AF is, in fact, based on the Elan 7 and the 1D has pretty much the EOS3 AF system can I assume that the 1D would have better AF? Specifically for indoor sports such as soccer and basketball in less than desirable light. Steve Mitchell? DavidP? Pope? Anybody? Thanks in advance.

Yes the 1D will still be much better!

Yes, the EOS 1 series will still have better AF, it is a Pro camera. This is the first that many have heard and seen the AF, no one will know of the performance until it ships to users and testers!

I've obviously not shot with a 10D, and I don't own a 1D, but I DO own an EOS 3 and a Elan 7E.

The AF system in the EOS 3 is a LOT faster than the AF system in the 7E. So if the 1D is based on the EOS 3 system (albeit without eye control) and the 10D is based on the 7/7E (also without eye control), then I'd have to say that the 1D would be faster with AF, hands down.

The EOS 3 and 1D are professional grade cameras, and the 7E and 10D are consumer/prosumer grade cameras.

Along with 1V and 1Ds, of course.

Of course the 1D will have better AF than the 10D if the 10D has the Elan 7 AF system. From the pictures, the 10D looks like a D30/D60/Elan7 class camera. However, the top LCD looks simlar to the 1D's so who knows what AF it will have.

..having the privilege to test them (1ds,1d,1v,10d, 33) side by side I have to say this is my feeling as well. Not too scientific, but the 1D autofocus is at a league of its own. Not too hard to tell it apart. Anyway, Canon would not shoot itself in the foot by creating a lower level camera, with AF better than its top level. (not only foolish, but maybe unattainable due to cost)

OOPS!! Sorry! I made a mistake. The 1D is based on the 1V AF system.

Please please forgive!

If you've got people (or things) moving quickly in less than desirable light, then the 1D is what you want.

For things that are more static in poor light (or moving in good light), something like the 10D may be good enough for most. This assumes the AF is similar to the Elan-7, and that my very limited experience comparing a D30 to Elan-7 inside a normally lit house has any bearing.

Elan 7 and Rebel Ti have the same AF system
which includes 7 sensors and one cross hair center.
The EOS 3 has 45 sensors with 7 cross hair
sensors. EOS 3 is also rated at EV -1 vs the Elan 7
and Rebel Ti rated at EV +1. EV is the important factor
as it allows AF in lower light and contrast situations. Basically
indoor, you'll get better response out of the EOS 3.
