who uses a graphics tablet?

I finally jumped in and ordered a 9 X 12 IntuosII from pcnation.com for $402.00....that's almost $70.00 less than ordering from Wacom directly.

After spending 3 weeks on a large project using a mouse, my wrist and arm screamed at me to get one....probably could have saved several days work if I had it at the start.

Good Luck!

I have an A3 second generation Wacom ...about 5 years old now
and still perfect in every respect.
It is absolutely essential with PS and even more accurate with
Painter 6
....the angles and pressure variations are brilliant! ...and
copying of the brush strokes 100%!
My advice if you have the space is to get the biggest one you can
find!
but there again different strokes for different folks :-)

The Pen Pal was the cheapo 4 X 5 made by Wacom about 5 years back. I'm still using it. I've always taped a piece of art paper to the surface to give it more of a drawing on paper real effect.

Now, at the time I bought the Pen Pal, I compared specs with the A3 and sensitivity was almost the same. I think the A3 had .003 thou difference sensitivity along the vertical axis. I used the A3 for three semesters at college studying Photoshop, Illustrator and Fractal Painter. At night I'd do my homework with the Pen Pal and notice no difference what so ever.

I'm gonna build a new system as soon as I get the courage to rob a couple liquor stores or I hit the lottery! :) So, as a consequence I've been checking out new tablets. I noticed there's quite a bit of difference between the sensitivities of the full blown pro Wacoms and the home user Graphires or whatever they're calling em. This may make a difference.

One more thing about size. The only problem I've had with the little 4 X 5 Pen Pal is keeping the thing on my lap. It's a bit narrow to lay firmly across both legs. This is where I use it. If you like to draw with the tablet on a table then that won't make a difference. Still, keep in mind the sensitivity differences. That will make a difference. It's changed quiite a bit between the $100 buck Graphire and the $399 dollar Intuos from when I purchased mine.

Anyone have any experience with the Aiptek models?

I have the Aiptek HyperPen 12000U. It's a large tablet, 11.88x8.88. The reason I got it was because it's a cheapie.....about 120$ at OfficeMax.

It works well, but I'm curious to know how it stacks up to the much more expensive Wacom models. I know the Wacoms have more pressure sensitivity levels, but all in all, does anyone know how they really compare? Would I be that much better off spending the money for one?
Thanks

I got the 9x12 Aiptek also. (for a Mac) I didn't want to pay the high price for a wacom, and I wanted a large tablet. I don't know how I did without it! No pentools and no eraser.
I to wonder if I'm missing much with the cheap tablet. Anyone used both?

Ah, another Aiptek user. Cool

I wanted a large tablet also, but I just can't justify the cost of the large Wacoms. If I used Photoshop on a regular basis professionally then maybe I could see it, but a week's salary for one for my needs and uses is just too much. I'd like to eat after I'm done using it, ya know?

I'd also like to know though if I'm missing out on a whole lot without the Wacom. I have a suspicion there's a reason for the big price difference. Be nice to hear from someone who's had experience with both.

David if it does what you want dont worry if you are missing something. I think the only thing you might be missing is the pen pressure adjustment with the wacom. I find that it does not mean to much in most cases.

As far as size, I have a 6 x 8 and I cant see going any bigger. If it were a repalcement screen to draw on the yes but you still have to look at a screen to see what your cursor is doing and mine is 17in so I do not see a need for a larger one.

Philip, thankyou for the advice.

If I ever do look into actually upgrading to a Wacom, your advice on size will definitely be taken into account. Makes much sense.
Thanks again.

TD;

I was wondering if it was OK to ask you a few things about your tablet. I'm experiencing a few problems with mine and was hoping you could let me know if you are too, or if you could point me in the right direction.
Feel free to e-mail me.
Thanks.
