close-up filters for 602?

Cyberguest,

They magnify, you really dont want to get any closer than the 602 already allows in super macro. The camera alone in super macro will allow you to get very very close, like the lens filter almost touching the subject. The close up lenses will allow you to fill the frame without needing to get 1 CM away, you could say be 1 foot away and zoom in to fill the frame. Again DOF is very small, in some cases maybe a CM or smaller.
Ted
how do they work?
magnify the object like a telescope, or just allows u to get closer
to the object?

thanks, ted, again.

that's what I thought, there is no way to get any more close than super macro does.

still a little bit confused, close up lens magnify the subject, and telescope lens bring the subject closer (in other words, magnifying the subject, but from far away). So the close-up lens can only be used for a really short range?

Essentially that's correct. A close lens is just a simple diopter lens, like in eyeglasses. A telescope works using a combination of lenses. It's magnification is determined by a ratio of the telescopes focal length to the magniftying eyepieces focal length.

Close up lenses are just that, designed to be used close, over a limited range.

SO, with the S602 having the super macro, how much help do the clos-up lenses give? Can I get essentially super macro from normal macro distance? And thereby use the flash?

Closeup lenses are just high quality magnifying glasses of various strengths. The Super Macro is at full wide angle so you have to get very close to make a small object look large enough. You can use the closeup lenses without going into macro mode and thereby use the full 6X zoom. That way you don't have to get very close, but the DOF will be less. You should be able to use a +1 closeup lens at the closest focus out of macro modes and use the flash, but +2 may be a bit too close and leave you with a dark bottom of the frame.

You could still use flash at the super macro close focus range, but it would have to be some sort of combination of off camera external flash would be my guess. But, owning a 6900, I've never had the opportunity to play with the super macro mode.

I'm sure you could find a series of close up diopters that would work well with the macro mode, and that does give you a bit mor working distance, though I'd still opt for off camera flash, even at standard macro distances.

With the 602, the flash is disabled in super macro mode. Not sure if the external hotshoe is disabled or not. New to this and I don't have an external flash yet. (Next on the list!)

Thanks for your comments on the diopters. Wondered how they worked. If you've not used the 602, let me tell you that the zoom does work in normal macro mode. Guess I have something else to add to the list...

The zoom in macro mode is limited to 2.3X. Using a +1 closeup lens and normal focusing will get you bigger images from a greater distance with the full 6X zoom.

Actually dont use macro with close up lenses ,i have a +4, 2 ,1 and i use the +4 most of the time with zoom.

The plus 1 wont be any good for smallish objects.

Yes you can get closer than using super macro.

I would highly reccomend getting the close up lenses much better than macro

I appreciate everyone's comments. Thanks!

Has anyone used a ring flash with the 602? And if so... do they work well?

Hi cyberguest,

Close-up filters actually reduces your focusing distance, which magnifies the subject in the process. Just like if you move your eyes closer to a subject. Does it appears bigger? But close-up filters have a rather fixed focusing distance when used with your cam. This distance may varies a bit for different cams but it somehow allows your cam to focus only at that specific distance.

Hector
