macro - anyone have a favorite tool?

yes...would would want the largest aperture (smallest number).
Ok bear with me...it's been a long time and I was never
particularly knowledgeable in the first instance :o)

My Oly Zuiko 50mm is a 1.8 - 16 (correct terms?) and when I have it
on 1.8 I cant see any of the curtains(???) but when I stop it down
at all from there the curtains(???) are aparent only when I push a
button on the side.

Now I know I havent used the right terms and that it probably
doesnt make any sense but I think...my lens stays open which is
good? Do I want the largest aperture, small number?

Another thing...how do I tell if it has mould? Would that be marks
on the inside of the glass that can't be wiped off??

G3 - WAITING...Waiting....waiting (backorder 10th
March!) _ _ _

that makes sense...1000:20 diopter = 50 mm...thus the original 250d canon close up lens is +4 diopter (1000:250 =4)...
back to my original question: how to avoid vignetiing with a f.1.4 lens and g2?
In everyday optics manufacturing all spherical lenses have a power
that is specified in diopters and it is usually referenced for
practical reasons to the back surface of the lens. Every eye doctor
has an instrument that can measure and display the diopter power of
single lenses or small assemblies less than about 2cm thick.

I use a large 22 diopter single element aspheric lens at work and
now that I have read about all these macro lens experiments I may
try to rig it up to my G3 to see what it can do.
The dipoter of a reversed 50 mm is about +25 (what I have read).
The only thing here is that I'm not sure what my 50mm
lens translates to in "diopter units" (anyone know the right word
for that? ;) ).

tx Don..just saw your macro gallery..
thery are great..do you also have
some shots with a reversed 50 mm lens?
Hi Martin,

Thanks very much... no, nothing with a 50mm because I don't own the lens or I'd be slapping that baby on the front of my Lensmate right now :-) My comments come from reading about other people's experiences with the 50mm.

I must admit, however, that now I know how much 50mm lenses cost and realize that they "only" go to about +25, I'm tempted to buy another Hoya +10 Macro Lens and put it together with my other one to see what I can capture.

Since I've had four filters plus the Macro Lens (at least the thickness of two filters) without vignetting, that might be a decent, relatively inexpensive way to go.

Just a thought. Good luck with your photography.

Don

I agree Don, if 2 +10s and a +4 will get you the same as a 50mm lens without vignetting and without the weight of the lens on the front of the camera that may be the way to go.

Better still to try to find a +20 if you can, less glass and with a +10 you'd really have some magnification there. I wonder what the focus distance would be though. I'd imagine the same as a 50mm with a +4, which is too close from my experience.

Depends on what type of filters fit on your 50mm lens. If it would take a 52mm filter then you'd need a 49 to 52mm coupler. Or a 49-52mm step up ring and then a 52-52mm coupler. But I know B&H has a 49-52mm coupler so you may as well just get that.

Use full zoom and crop (or clone) a little in the corners.

tx Paul...one more stupid querstion: I have a g2, a 49 mm lensmate adapter, a 49 macro filter, and a 50 mm lens. Iin that case do I need a 49> 49 ring?

martin,

That depends on what thread size your 50mm lens has - remember you are reversing it so that the lens side will attach to the diopter. You will need a male to male (reversing coupler ring). Many 50mm lenses have either a 52 or a 58mm thread. So lets assume a 52mm for the moment, then the order

would be Camera---Lensmate(which is 49mm threaded)---49mm macro diopter-- 49mm-52 male to male step-up coupler ring---50mm lens reversed.

Tx a lot joeMA...but how do I know if my lens has a 52 or 58 mm thread? it doesn't say?
