which lens

Nonsense. No distortion.
With 35mm or a FF sensor, the 85mm simply is not long enough to give a pleasing perspective of a person's face in a tight portrait.
Esp with the 1.5 fov the distance from
lens to subject would prohibit any distortion.
Not "especially with" .. but "because of" ..

You're very defensive about this lens, and this blinds you to the simple fact that with a 35mm / FF sensor, the 85mm isn't long enough to use as a tight portrait lens. A lens in the region of 105 - 120 / 135 will give more pleasant results.

But with a camera like the D100, the 1.5x magnification factor does immediately imply a further working distance to take a close-up portrait .. the 85mm effectively becomes a 127mm lens .. which is a great focal length for tight portraits .. and hence the perspective for a tight portrait is good.

.. I think the Nikkor 28 - 70 mm 2.8 (for sports and other studio)
This is such a great lens! You're going to love it.
.. and a 150 (2.8 or 1.8??)(portraits) might be the sizes that I need.
Here I would recommend the 105mm f2 DC lens. The Defocus Control allows you to adjust the bokeh and how the background and foreground goes out of focus .. the perfect portrait lens. It is also regarded as a very sharp optic.

I don't have it .. but it is definitely the next lens on my list as soon as budget allows it. (The 17-35mm f2.8 and studio lighting and Quantum Qflash kinda killed my budget recently. sigh )

I normally shoot medium format but now getting into the digital end
of it. I, like many of you, are on the 14n waiting list. I need
to purchase a lens or two. I normally shoot seniors, families,
kids in studio. I also will need a lens for memory mates (dance,
sports) etc. I want to invest in lenses that will give the best
optical quality on the market. I would really appreciate help
choosing the right lens(s). After reading - I think the Nikkor 28

comments on these lenses, please let me know. Thank you.
Thanks for all of the help. I made a mistake in my original post I meant to say 105mm lens not 150(thinking of MF). My current MF is a Hasselblad system and yes I have looked into the digital back, but they are currently selling at $12K - I think it is still a little pricey. Thanks again it really helps to hear all of your opinions. Sharon
