well I was pretty shocked when I saw the new S50. It definitely is true since its on Walmart. UNLESS walmart got hacked bad by a canon fan. heh.

either way I was just thinking.. the G series is canon's top of the line and having an ultra compact (s) having a larger megapixel count is totally odd. I can almost bet that G4 will come out real soon.

seeing that S50 came out not too long after S45, I can almost bet G4 will come out in the next 3 months or so.

finally I can set my sight on a 5 megapixel cam :) gotta start saving right now!!

its also strange that there's no model replacing the 330.. doesn't anybody think so? MAYBE canon is thinking of releasing another generation of cams.. probably even better than the G?

It all makes sense now. Off to Ritz I go to return the S45 and S230. I can play this game also Canon! hehehe

to see what the feature set is. Maybe it will turn out to be the same size CCD with 1mp more crammed into it. The Olympus 5050 is becoming legendary for its noise at low ISO ratings. Don't automatically assume that the S50, G4 or whatever is an improvement over what is now available. More MP also means larger files, slower computers, etc. Are you going to get a new computer to accommodate your new camera. Some will but many may not want to. I have a Piii 550 and I can only go so far with it :-(

Sony F717 Canon G3

no way 4mp, man... cramming more megapixels will just produce undesirable results.

I think they will move over to 3mp.. but something just tells me they're going to go for another prosumer level camera.. the g series doesn't quite seem to match up to nikon's 5700 or sony's f717 or olympus 5050... so maybe we'll see something new. that's IMHO.

But as James with C-5050 pointed out, that camera produces much sharper pictures than most Canon cameras and have real macro to boot.

Actually, more MP doesn't mean slower computers. If you want to know what is SLOW, try playing Unreal Tournament 2003 on a Pentium 166MMX at an impressive 2 frames per second... or SimCity 4 on a fully-overclocked Athlon 'Barton' XP 3000+.

hahaha u must have read the tom's hardware guide review :)

I would get a canon g4 if it were 5 megapixels... will get it after a few months of its release when its cheap cheap :)

that theyll reduce the g series to a 2.6 megapixel sensor. i would
by that in a heartbeat. less noise, smaller files, able to store
more pictures on the card...
Well...this isn't totally true. A larger CCD will avail more bits/pixle=greater dynamic range. This means more bytes/pixle, which partially negates the smaller filesize advantage.

you failed to include that i was kidding :-\ but thats ok, my aim wasnt to be technical, but thanks for the info, really... im always up for learning more.

...my photography instructor practically ordered me to wait a little more before upgrading from my G1?

I'll just have to wait and see. I'm growing more patient.

Of course, there still remains the question of whether Canon will dare call it "G4".....

then what is it about small lenses which have problems having high megapixel count? What problems occur here?

The G3 came out less than 4 months ago. The G2 is still available in large quantities. What makes you think Canon is in a hurry to release another G-series camera?

well its like what I said...

firstly.. why did canon have to come up with S50 anyway when S45 is on the market now?

besides there's some talk in some other forum that canon will be coming out with a G5 as opposed to G4.. perhaps 5 for 5 megapixel?

and.. the g series is definitely higher end prosumer than the S... so rightfully the g should offer higher megapixel count don't you think? afterall the megapixel count is usually the 'main' attraction...
that's my 2 cents worth.
i agree, i dont think it would be wise for canon to realease
another g for a while. lots of people wouldnt be happy = bad for
canon. not that releasing a g would turn everyone to other
companies, but people would be more hesitant to buy from a company
that did stuff this way.

Did what stuff???? So Canon should keep G3 for many years while other companies release more advance cameras? Which way did they lose customers more? You are dealing with high tech. equipment so you have to accept the fact that the better and cheper things are around the corner.

That's where I totally agree.. I used to think that they would wait at least about 10 months b4 getting an upgrade... when S50 came out.. it changed my perceptions completely..

come to think about it.. its ideal for them to come out with a new cam cause S45 has already sold alot and remember tat ppl paid premium for it.. its price is gonna reduce now and eventually phase out.

heck, it doesnt bother me, i bought a used g2 after the g3 came out. im not worried about losing money on an 'investment' because i bought a camera three months ago which now has a successor. so i wasnt speaking for myself. but i can see how - if i was that way - i would not be happy if i had just bought a brand new camera and have to look at the upgrade a month later. i didnt say that they would lose customers. it might be important to notice that i said: 'not that releasing a g would turn everyone to other companies...' translation: 'releasing a new g doesnt necessarily mean that people would turn to other companies...'

and, 'but people would be more hesitant to buy from a company that did stuff this way.' translation: 'id be hesitant to keep up with cameras in a way that, if i wanted the latest thing, i would want to buy a new camera every three months.'

im no idiot - i dont mind companies advancing in technology at all. but if the trend is going to be a new camera every three months then ..lets see.. would i rather buy a used, three month old camera off of ebay for cheaper than normal, or buy a brand new camera from canon. gee tough choice. and i realize that the seller is probably going after a new model, but canon surely doesnt receive commission from the ebay seller from him selling a canon product. does that make any sense?
Gamo.

you should always note that prices fall as the product ages... so for example u can buy a G2 for 500 or lower now.. a G3 would cost about 600 bucks.
u're paying for what u get. if u have to have the latest.. u have to pay :)

I'm waiting for a 5 megapixel to come out. (g series) then wait another 6-7 months perhaps? yeah that would be my plan..

My predictions is:

The soonest released date of the next G series will be end of this fall (one year after the release of G3).

Walmart has removed the links to their S50 and A70 pages. So let's wait and see. For new releases news I think dpreview is still one of the best source.
