Great news, my friend! Thanks for sharing!

At first I shot JPEG because I was naive and wanted quantity over quality.
Then I shot RAW, because I was still naive but wanted quality over
quantity. Now I've gone back to JPEG because I'm no longer naive, and I
want both quantity and quality.

you need to upload your pictures to a site like pbase.com and then add the link to the photo's in your message. to get the link just right click on the thumbnail and choose "copy shortcut" and then paste it into your message and then add a .jpg to the link(without the .jpg it will just be a link to the page on pbase. click the preview button so see that it works and then if all's well, hit post.

looking forward to seeing your samples.

Hi deshawn-

Did the mention a price? Street, MSR?

How did it look at 12mm from a distortion POV?

In the vertical shot, there's a purple fringe in the highest ceiling lights and what looks like a purple fringe on the top left edge of the white curved panel. I'd like to see what this lens does outdoors and see if the chromatic aberration is as apparent on a Nikon camera's CCD.

At least the dummies at Popular Photography got their facts wrong when the said the lens isn't compatible with the S2.

The following is taken form http://nikon.virtualpresscentre.co.uk/pressreleases/68.shtml

"The lens will be available in April with the rrp of £899.99"

I also checked the same press release at nikonusa.com, but there was no mention of price there.

No, he didnt. but my prediction is no more than $400-$500
the lense wasnt metal, but some sort of plastic-but sturdy

look damn good.
everyone's gonna love it.
i will try to upload now.

Well, that's really interesting! It's only small size JPGs, but... it doesn't look that much better (if any) than my Nikon 18-35 IF-ED.

Perhaps I won't get one after all. But I wonder if that's the extra few millimeters causing the problems?

I'm just glad someone was able to finally play with one of these on an S2....I never expect high quality from quick shots using a new lens at a trade show.

Thanks for sharing these.

Actually, the difference between 12 and 18 mm is not minor. Keep in mind that 18 is 50% more than 12, so the difference is almost as great as the difference between an 18 and a 28mm lens - the difference between ultrawide and normal wide on a film body.

So, I don't think anyone will buy this lens because it has better image quality than an 18 (or 17 or 20mm) lens, but because it reopens the ultrawide end of the spectrum again (like placing my 17-35 on a film camera - big difference from a 28mm)!

To me, the only issue is whether we will see full frame in the relatively near future. If so, this lens is not needed.

Best,

GP

Deshawn:

Thanks so much for sharing that news. That rocks! I actually made the decision to purchase the S2 (as opposed to waiting for something with a full-frame sensor to reach the market at a similar price) as soon as news of the forthcoming 12-24 lens hit DPReview.com. I was slightly skeptical after Popular Photography indicated that the lens would not work with non-Nikon D series D-SLRs, although logic suggests that such a move would cut Nikon off from half its potential customer base for such a lens.

Thanks again for letting us all know.

I did not even attempt to look at a fairly small JPEG with the hopes of identifying chomatic abberation; rather, my biggest concern was looking to see if there would be much in the way of barrel roll on such an extraordinarily wide-angle lens. It's a bit difficult to tell for certain, since that really requires looking at a vertical line near the left or right edge of the image, but as best I can tell from these shots, there is little or no barrell roll. That will be a big deal for those aspiring to use this lens for architectural photography.

As for the quality comparing to an 18 mm lens, I can vouch for the fact that 12mm is an entirely different ballgame than 18mm. I got a bit spoiled with having a 17 mm equivalent on my point-and-shoot camera with the wide-angle lens adapter. I am looking for that ultra-wide perspective, sans the peskly barrel roll, for my real estate interior shots.
