S50

You may have something there :-)
One thing for sure if WalMart really is the first to show the S-50
on their web site..It sure gos to say they WM are pretty BIG
players in the camera game.
They just got someone in the PMA 2003 to get some pictures of the
future models so they can be "the first".

While we were snowed in with the big storm, Canon introduced and immediately discontinued the S50, dumping the leftover stock on Wal-Mart, who immediately rolled-back the price and sold out. Those that bought the S50 are very regretful, as the S60 is about to appear on the Dell site with a delivery promise of August, 2008 and an actual delivery date of December 2014. From here on, most of the forum posts will be entitled "Should I get the S60 or wait for the S70?"

Great analysis; I got a good chuckle out of it!

Actually, what happened at the big W is something they are notorious for ... other vendors have experienced it in the past.

Wholesale product information is pre-released to major retailers and distributors for product placement and pipeline priming. This is done with a strict release date that is not supposed to be breached (although frequently small details leak out anonymously from the distributor pipeline and fall through cracks on the way to the end-line small retailers, especially as the release date draws closer).

Wal-Mart, with the retail clout they have, risks very little by releasing the information early. It may be intentional or accidental on Wal-Mart's part, but either way it is clear that they do not have the same tight controls in place as most of the big retailers and distributors. This is probably due to the overwhelming number of suppliiers they deal with, their effort to keep things as streamlined as possible, and how little risk they themselves take on if something slips.

We, the consumers, can only enjoy these little nuggets that filter through the ether and light up our monitors. May they be frequent and prompt!

Anyone else see the s50 on Walmart.com?? It is black body and is 5
mp and 3x optical zoom. I just happen to come across it today. Any
info would be helpful.
The camera is likely legit, as a recent conversation with a Canon rep would indicate to me. He told me a purchase of the s45 might make one 'sorry' in march. As to the noise issue on the sensor, perhaps Canon used the intervening months from the introduction of the chip to now, to resolve it.

After all they declined to put a 5mp chip in the G3 precieseley because of the noise problem.

The S45 was pretty much more than I wanted to spend. Seems like the more you look into it, the more you expand your budget. Took the S45 for $438 shipped from onecall.com. I've dealt with them before and they are a good company to work with. The 5MP doesn't interest me much, and it's unlikely that they are going to fix all of the little criticisms of the S45 in the S50 - macro performance, 5-way selector, light meter bar in manual mode, etc. Besides, the wal-mart price, if for real, is prolly not too far off at $597. I can't imagine it being within $100 of $438, nor can I imagine the S45 coming down more than $20-50 below $438 with the S50's introduction.

I've been 'looking' for 6 months, just sucked it up, and I'll deal should the S50 be the kingdom, power and glory. Besides, I will still shoot an N80 regularly, and a possible future digital camera would be a sub-$1k Nikon DSLR w/ interchangeable lenses that I've heard.

Whatever I have to tell myself,
Rob

I'm gonna be more then a little disappointed if a s50 and g4 get released soon after plunking down premium cashflow on a G3. I consider a bump to 5 megapixles a pretty significant evolutionary step... even if it is a little nosier

I really think S50 is going to come out. Given Fuji and others are promoting a new CCD, Canon cannot sit still and losing market. MAP for S45 is $499 with a MRSP of $599. Pushing toward X'Mas, S45 should be around $350 and S50 would be around $499. If we're lucky to find Dell coupon, we may get S50 at $450. Hey DELL, you have my order cancel and thanks for keeping my waiting.. Now, I wonder how Dell is going to dell with all the S45 that's coming to the nearest warehouse..

oh yea, and another thing, IMO, there is no way I'd pay nearly $600 for that lens and a camera without a hotshoe, or flip lcd, don't care how many MP..looks like more noise to add to the redeye problems.

I would not pay $600 for it. Perhaps, $450. S45 is $350 to me now...

I can just see all the G2/G3 vs S50 debates starting already....seriously speaking tho, they seem to be adding a megapixel every year...at this rate my cameras are becoming obsolete faster than ever....

I doubt I need anything more than 4MP though. Our family hardly need anything more than 8X10. I think they should focus more on getting the picture right. My Olympus (film) is really suck. One out of 36 shots would be blurred and it was always the best moment.

The only reason I will look at the S50 rather than the S45 is because 5 mp (If the noise isnt a problem) will reslove more detail than 4mp and that will make my 8x10's look even better than with the 4mp ccd.

S45 will not sell for $350 for awhile, hek the S30 still sells for $399! Sure cameras will always change quickly, but the one thing we will never be able to buy is: the ability to use one correctly! A pro could use an instant camera and beat what I do with 4MP!
