"Excoozay mwa ignorami", ...or something like that ;-)

I'm not a heavy (or skilled) PS user, but hope to be someday.

Meanwhile I'd like to(sort-of at least) keep up.

I started with ver. 5.5(or so) bought the 6 upgrade, but now have a question.

Considering PSUG 7, AND Adobe RAW converter, I find that : PSUG 8 will include RAW-con, ...and the stand-alone RAW -con is problematic(at least at this early date) with Macs(my system).

So I'm thinking, ...wait and get PSUG 8/RAW-con, ...by-which-time the bugs will be gotten-out, ...and I don't really have much use for it now anyway (I'm waiting for the 1Ds to come down some).

Main question" If you skip an up-grade(7), will the next version(8) fill-in-the-gap, so to speak, or will you be missing something you needed to get with the interim step?"

Thanks for any help!

You can skip upgrades with no problems.

Any upgrade you buy requires ONLY the original full version CD that you bought to work. It doesn't require any of the upgrade CD's in between.

not sure if that's entirely true. i seem to remember reading that i needed a serial number from at least version 3 when i upgraded to 5.5. i could be very wrong of course!

Now, Adobe's policy is to list the previous couple of versions as directly upgradeable. The state that if you have a still older version to call them and they will tell you how to upgrade. I think that has more to do with the fact that PS serial numbers have grown and are in a different format from the old numbers.

For some reason I used my brains and called Adobe before I upgraded from 4 (Full Version) to 6, when 6 was first released. They told me I had to order it directly from them to get the correct upgrade (i.e. for my version 4 serial to work with the upgrade).

Don't worry, if you upgrade you get the full monty, (you have got a legit version of PS haven't youº so I suppose yes it does fill in the gaps, you may notice differences in the way previous basic actions used to work that's because they have improved them, you just have to get your head around it

Hi Walter,

I just ordered the 7.0 upgrade from Adobe. I called them and they said no problem upgrading from 5.0 so at least two versions have passed and will still upgrade. Their site didn't say anything about requiring a specific version to be required - actually here is the actual text from their site....

Adobe Photoshop 7.0 Upgrade

To install upgrade successfully, you will need a serial number and a previous version of this product on the same platform as this purchase. Upgrade does not apply to Photoshop Elements, Photoshop Limited Edition, or Adobe PhotoDeluxe owners.

I'm more concerned about my existing plug-ins working or not. Things like Genuine Fractals, MagicMask, etc. Some, like MagicMask are no longer available - and I would hate to loose it. It might require running two versions - difficult or impossible with the "upgrade" since the upgrade overwrites the lower version.

No problem,

I have a new machine and loaded Photoshop direct from the PS 7.0 upgrade CD. During the upgrade it asked for original media for verification. I loaded the PS 5.0 CD which was accepted and the upgrade completed OK.

Lin,

I started out with PS5.0, full version, and went thru 5.5, 6.0, 7.0 and 7.0.1 upgrades. I installed each new one in a new folder,so that I could still have access to the older version in case of glitches If the upgrade disk doesn't find the older version, it asks for the original media so it can verify the authenticity.

My genuine fractals 2.5 still works, as do most of the other plugins and filters I have added on, such as LensDoc, Eye Candy, etc. Dome plugins that worked only for 5.5 or 6.0 will not work with 7.0, period. But if you go into Edit> Preferences> Plugins and Scratchdisks, you can select a 2nd folder for your plugins. When you decide that you have enough confidence in the upgrade, you can copy your plugins from the old folder to the new one.

It seems that you know this clearly.

I have 6.01 ( Download upgrade over 6.0 ). To upgrade to 7.0, do I need (1) the Serial # of 6.0 (2) Physical 6.0 CD (3) 6.01 installed on the HDD.
Thanks !

If I remember correctly, the 7.0 installer asked for my previous version's CD. I don't remember if it accepted the old serial number or gave me a new one...But if you have the original CD of any full version, you are OK.

Lin,

PS7 does not replace PS6. At least, not when I upgraded. I wasn't given the opportunity to replace the existing installation, I ended up with both versions. This worried me a bit that they weren't confident about PS7, but eventually, I just uninstalled PS6. So you can keep both versions going to check that all your plug-ins will work.

Hi Roger,

Thanks! I actually discovered that after receiving my upgrade CD. I installed it on one of my notebook computers which had version 5, and just as you said, it created a separate folder. Also, as I suspected - even after installing MagicMask in the plug-ins folder of version 7.0, it was not recognized - so to use it I will be forced to keep both versions active.

The reason I was concerned was that the Adobe representative I spoke with over the phone told me that 7.0 would overwrite 5.0 - obviously a mistake on her part.

Best regards,

Lin
