Minolta 7Hi

This thread is a little old by now and perhaps the original poster has already made up his/her mind on which camera to buy. But even though I opted for the 7Hi over the Nikon 5700 because of the features already mentioned ad nauseum by others I had never handled the Nikon. Today I stopped by the local Compusa to see if they had any CF's on sale (I only have a 128mb and a 64mb, looking for at least another 256 or 512 card) and I had a chance to pick up and see what the 5700 was like. Well I hate to bash the Nikon since I hear the pic's it takes are on par or better (very subjective of course, depending on who you ask.. that is if you can get it to focus properly :) than the Minolta 7 series but it definitely does not have the feel of a solid built camera (cracks or no cracks) It very much feels like a glorified point and shoot camera especially with its electic zoom and the controls did not appear to be intuitive. It also felt much lighter than the 7Hi (perhaps the battery pack was not in it since it was connected to an external power cord) and very plasticky. Definitely didn't have the feel of an SLR like the Minolta does.
I'm down to a 7Hi vs. a Nikon 5700 - any Minolta enthusiasts out
there who can tell me why the 7HI ???
The 7hi flogs the 5700 all over imaging capturing spectrum. Petteri
and others defined the 7hi's advantages clearly. I will also argue
lens length and possible build quality are the only 5700 advantages.

After handling both cameras (I bought my 7Hi about a month ago now) I decided the Minolta was the way to go. I wrote a weblog entry on the topic if you are interested in seeing the various reasons. They included all the standard stuff you hear about batteries, filters, feels more like a real camera, etc. etc..

Now that I am a month in I find the battery suckage annoying (I use only 1800+ma batteries in good shape but I commonly shoot in cold weater) but once coupled with the Digipower DPS-9000 my most major concern seems to have been eliminated (currently on clearance at Best Buy for $21.99).

Would I buy it again? Yes. I'm extremely happy with the camera.

Could you send me the url of Best Buys webpage with the DPS 9000 on it? I did a search at Bestbuy.com and the only digipower products that come up are ac adaptors for Nikon and Olympus. Perhaps you didn't see the sale on the website but at the store? Please let me know as if it is not available on line I will check out the local stores.

Thanks

I've heard this battery issue on several threads now but I have to say this: after owning the 7Hi for 2 weeks now I find it pretty much a non-issue when the camera settings are adjusted as follows: Set the EVF to auto and turn off the autoLCD. Its really that simply. Battery life is extended dramatically and you can still on the LCD whenver you choose with a simple button on the back of camera. On Auto the EVF only comes on when you put your eye up to the viewfinder and with LCD off the LCD only comes on when you manually turn it on. Great feature set and simple to change either back and forth if you really need the LCD on.

Additionally: A second (or third) set of AA batteries and the above settings = battery issue becomes non-issue.

Well guess you didn't get back to reading the thread. Stopped by my local BestBuy and bought their last digipower DPS-9000 $21.99

thanks for the good advice.
