New MicroDrives with QV-3000

Paul and Rick:

When I checked the first picture taken with DiCaInfo, it shows 1.002 already and as Dan mentioned, that was the one from IBM. Is that the same one

you have now Paul? 1.002 is a minor revision that is probably bug fixes. If it was like 1.01, then maybe it would be a bigger issue. If it does go to like 1.1, then maybe it would be functionality or features.

By the way, I just installed it per IBM's directions (trivial task).
Has anybody used the new 512meg or
1gig MicroDrives with the
Casio-QV3000? I am wondering if they
truly are compatable

As soon as I'll get one, I will install
the new firmware
for the QV-3000 (provided by IBM) and
post some test results.

Vince,
Thanks Eckhard.... I used DiCaInfo and found out the info. But what I
mean is pretty much all electronic equipment that has flash roms have a
diagnostic mode or startup will show the version number on the screen.
There should be something like this - an "unknown" "hidden" key press combination...

Very interesting!

I did a download and installed it successfully.

And I took a look in the file using a hex editor and extracted some strings of interest.

It seems Casio uses a "pSOS+" operating system and an ARM processor.

Vince,

as far as I know there are the following version numbers known:

1.000
1.001
1.002

Duncan,
The update instructions state to use the AC adapter. I don't have one.
I have one (not an original Casio, I use the AC adapter of my Sony MiniDisc player) - but I was interested in this question.

It is possible to do the installation with batteries - an AC adapter is not needed.

The installation takes about 20 seconds - this is the time you have to insure there is no loss of batterie power.
I would recommend to take fresh batteries/accus.

There is a self checking of the file. If the file would have been changed (for example by a corrupted download) the message "FILE CORRUPTED" will appear during the installation and the installation will abort.

I checked it ;-)

There is no need to remove/insert the CF device (CF card or MicroDrive).

If you use a USB connection you can copy the file via USB to the camera (CF device).

Eckhard
Do we think this is a mandatory requirement or a recommended
nice-to-have (ie no chance of losing power during the update, which
would probably be fatal)?

Duncan

Eckhard:

Thanks! Did the version you just download from IBM, was that 1.002?

Makes you wonder who actually wrote the Firmware. Is it IBM or is it Casio or is it a third party?

Heh. I'll figure it out when I figure out the rest of the camera.. Haven't played with it much after having it for a week.

If I understand your question, I installed the 1.002 firmware from IBM's site yes. It was 1.000 before I did the install.

I haven't noticed any difference, but I always like to have the latest firmware. Who knows, maybe it included a refined an algorithm like sharpness or night mode, etc. I doubt it though as others have said - probably just bug fixes, not that I've ever noticed any bugs until now.

Good question.

Maybe Casio or a third party wrote it and IBM fixes the bugs ... ;-)
Heh... I mean it's funny that IBM has the firmware while Casio doesn't.. I noticed on Casio's Japan site, they have PhotoLoader 1.0j available for download... But the US site has nothing other than product information..

You understand correctly. How long ago did you get your QV-3000?

Mines already had 1.002 but I'll just update it anyways since I just want to experience what the camera is like updating the firmware...

The US site is huge in comparison to the UK site ( http://www.casio.co.uk ) or the german site ( http://www.casio.de ).
