Ian, thanks for the post. I have seen the Fry's add in Orange County So. Cal newspapers, but only for the Sharp 3Mp, @ $300. I'm unfamiliar with the HP. I guess the two cameras are 4 Mp. Could you please tell me more about them, and where you found them. Your pictures look suspiciously like So Cal. Thanks, Tim

hi Ian,

I like the shots but already knew I like the hp.The sharp photos while nice, seems to be a bit dark.I wonder if the sharp and Hp have same processors or something, They look amazingly similar. Can you post a few indoor shots ? thanks

Sorry,
No indoor shots!'
I thought they were a bit dark too.
BUT
I have Photoshop so adjustments are easy for me to apply.

Ian: Have you taken any night shots and indoor shots with the Sharp? I would love to see them. Does the Sharp have a noise reduction feature? What about a focus assist light? thanks.

i bought the 4mp version of this camera for a friend for christmas and have had an opportunity to play with it some. my 10 quick impressions are as follows:

1) at $299 the price seems right
2) start up time is slow.

3) shutter lag is horrible -- you push the buttoon, wait a couple of seconds, hear the fake shutter noise, and then a second or 2 later it makes the exposure.
4) image quality is only ok. a little noisy and chromatic aberations abundant
5) no mac software included
6) ac adapter included!!!
7) blazes through batteries
8) very plasticy feel
9) very vivid color
10) slow image transfer

I bought the Sharp 3.2MP model for $227 at Fry's. After a few days of testing, I don't have much complaint except that my shots under sunlight using Auto mode tend to have a heavy purple tint. Using Program mode with daylight white balance helps to remove the purple tint in general, but the camera still sees my son's deep blue jacket as somewhat purple under direct sunlight, while my neighbor's Nikon Coolpix 5000 sees that same deep blue jacket as deep blue under similar condition.

Shots under cloudy sky seems just fine.

Indoor shots' color are quite accurate. No complaint about that.

I am no photography expert, so the above observations are just what my eyes see. Hopefully I can find a way to correct the purple tint problem, otherwise I will return the camera within 2 weeks.

Ian, other than the samples, could you give some impressions of the camera? Compared to the UZi, for example (other than the zoom and pixel count)? How is the exposure outdoors (I read that on a sunny day pics turn out a bit dark without exposure compensation)? Shutter lag, shot-to-shot? Thanks!

Once complaint about the Sharp 4MP camera for both reviews was the softness of the images. I processed several sample images using free photocontrol program that Vtie posted on this site and it made an incredible difference. The photocontrol program really made the difference. This camera's photos, using this automated processing, looked great.

I made a half dozen 4x6 prints using my Epson photo printer from Steve's sample images (JPEGs) from the Sharp, the Canon G2 and the Canon S45.

Even after looking at the prints under a magnifying glass it is my opinion that the Sharp prints are just as good (or in a few cases better) than the G2 or the S45. The G2 has more/better features, and the S45 is a tad more compact and has a tougher case/body, but neither of these more expensive cameras produced image quality that was FAR SUPERIOR to the Sharp.

I might have noticed something if I made 13x19 prints and used the G2 in RAW mode, but few P&S photographers make 13x19 prints or shoot in anything other than JPEG mode. And let's not kid ourselves, this Sharp digicam is obviously made for P&S people who just want an everyday digicam. If you need a true prosumer camera you shouldn't be looking at the Sharp. That said, if you just want 4MP image quality and a basic 3x lens, the Sharp looks like a very good camera.

At only $300, I think I might get one as a "knock around" camera just so I don't have to be paranoid about leaving my $800 digicam in my coat pocket.

Sorry for the late reply to this thread but I own a Sharp 40U and just joined this forum. I concur with the comments made. I looked at the facts (pictures) in the reviews and dismissed the comments. I saw nothing to justify spending an extra $100-$500 on competing cameras unless I needed some specific feature. If I needed pro features I would not be looking at anything less than $900 let alone a camera in this price range.
