David:

Have you found that you have to adjust the exposure calibratrion from factory? I hope to have mine set up this weekend and a little concerned about the learning curve after reading some of the comments on this board.

Rob,

I just tested my light yesterday with the meter most people are saying that I am 1/3 under with my pic so I think this is acceptable at least for me.That could be also my camera that always underexpose(which sometimes is good that)so I think I won't touch the meter.Let me know how you are doing.Hope you get setup soon. How much was your difference?

That's exactly my setup. No problems at all with metering. As
always, be careful to avoid burning out highlights.

I can live with a tad under exposed. If I get those results, I will lighten in PS. Can't wait to get set up but just unpacking these Bees is a process in and of itself. Now, I have to take the softbox apart and turn the darn ring around.

Looks like we are on a similar time track with studio lighting. Do you have examples to share?

If you are getting small underexposure without softbox, I may have to bump it up a little. Good thing these 800s have more power than I need.

It really depends. A few days ago, I was shooting someone wearing a bright white shirt and it was burning out like crazy so in that case, yes (and I also moved the lights around a bit to try to minimize it). In general of course, like with slide film, a bit under is a lot safer than a bit over. The nice thing about digital is it's easy to evaluate it on the spot and correct it then.

Exactly the setup I'm using...plus PocketWizards, which I would be without. Setup works great. Meter is dead-on for general shooting. Always have to tweak for unique subject setups, but that's too be expected....and the advantage of digital.

Add the PWs to your setup and you'll never regret not having to work around sync cords, especially when shooting mobile subjects.

We have exactly the same setup also, and I too WOULD NOT be without our Pocket Wizard Plus Transmitter for the D100, Receiver for one of our Strobes, and the module for the L-358.

Thanks Loren:

Are you having any trouble with too much power from the 800s? I have moved the lights back as far as I can and still have trouble shooting anything less that F8. I can't blur the backdrop at that stop. Any advice.

Thanks again for responding.

No, I haven't....you can power them down quite a ways. Be sure you're shooting at the lowest ISO setting. I typically shoot for F8, however, as I like to have some DOF on the subject. You could always trying draping a layer of something (cloth, rip-stop, etc.) over the front of your lights if you needed to cut it more than the light itself allows.

Thanks. I may have to try that or just blur backgrounds in PS7.

No, I haven't. On the lowest power I am able to get down into the 5.6 range with a softbox or Brolly. Are you using any diffusing devices? Try some white material over the light to cut down on the output.
