Like many others have reported, I was not happy with the neckstrap supplied for the G3 by Canon. It got in the way of opening the CF card door, and impeded use of the swiveling LCD.
Several posts have been made suggesting use of aftermarket straps, including what seems to be bulky hand-held items.
I liked the adjustable strap that Canon supplied for my G1.
So, I got another G1 strap from Canon last week, and it works fine on the G3. I attached it to the side near the CF card. It can be used as a hand-held strap or a neck strap (although the camera dangles from the attached end rather then the more balanced G3 strap). Seems to be a nice compromise to me.
BTW, Canon only had 9 of these left when I got mine. They are about $7.00 + shipping.
