No doubt about it! I've used the Sunpak and the Vivitar with success but they really cannot compare with the Quantaray QTB 9500A flash I purchased last week. I had a chance to compare it in the identical lighting situation and it blows the others away.

.clearly shows the difference. The last 3 images were taken with the Quantaray .All the rest were with the Sunpak 383 super.

The "Promaster" shots look much better. hehehe. How do you control output on the Quantaray? Is it fully automatic like the Pro/Sony module combo?

I use the Quantaray in autoflash mode with the camera in manual. Not any different than with any other non dedicated flash. I really love the results from this flash.

At first I couldn't understand why everyone was so thrilled with their Promaster ,after all a flash is a flash. (Not true!) This flash is a marked improvement over the others I've had. My flash images now require virtually no post processing at all. I could say a lot more but don't want to risk being repetative.

What module did you buy with your 9500, John? I'm trying to find a non-dedicated module for my 5750 but not having much luck. Why didn't you go with the 5750 and dedicated Sony module? I'm hoping to find the Quanteray module that will fit my 5750.
Cheers! Pete D.

Well done John! But I think you've blinded everyone sitting on the other side of the court!

I don't do much flash work, but if I could find a set up that works that well, I would consider an addition to my gear!

Could you post a pic of your camera/flash set up?

I can't seem to find the Quantaray ST or ML (auto, the one with the red LED on front) module anywhere online. I already have the 9500 flash....any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have the ML module. It's a non dedicated one for use on the Minolta SLR's and available from Ritzcamera.

I bought the Quantaray because (1)it was available locally . (2) Ritz's return policy is 30 days (3) it was only $84.95 + $15.00 for the module and appears to be the same flash as the more costly Promaster .

.....near and almost under the hoop at these high school games , I don't feel a bit guilty. After all, I'm sitting in the bleachers at 1/2 court. I thought about shooting under the hoops too but I am really afraid that it would start a precedence among other amateur snapshooters and cause an increase, thereby making flash more noticeable and perhaps even inviting negativity and ruining my present situation. I may not capture every face shooting but I'm satisfied with what I have been able to get so far.

The news PJ's (pros) are generally accepted in those prime positions (under the hoops) and it's OK with me as I sure don't want to push the envelope and create what appears to be a non issue. AFAIK , few other amateurs are getting results that compare with mine .

Based on my presence at most games and a few recipients (parents/grandparents) who have received an 8x10 print from me of their favorite player ,word has gotten around. I have been asked by the city HS team booster club to provide photo's for a slide show presentation at the annual post season dinner celebration next month and to do the team pictures.

Given the budget cuts and number of fundraising activities required to support HS sports I feel somewhat obligated to do my share in this capacity. I do the same for Little league sports and have gained much experience skill in return. I spend a considerable amount of time and money shooting/printing sports but it is worth it and everyone benefits .These kids are the best possible investment in our future and worth every moment and penny we can spend in their interests. It's also a great way for someone my age (60) to continue contributing to the community and life in general and feel appreciated instead of feeling like being perceived as a retired worn out senior citizen.

You won't, except maybe a used one on Ebay; Quantaray is a private label brand of Ritz Camera.

Hi John..The flash pics are impressive! Would you happen to have the Ritz Catalog number for the Module that you are using with the flash or a link to it? I can't seem to locate it on the Ritz web site. Thanks, Tom.

Hi John, glad the flash is working out, I too love my 7500a Quantaray. You and I are doing about the same thing with the HS kids, I also post the best 40-50 of the 100-120 a game I shoot on the internet. I created a Pbase account for the school and put the pictures of football and basketball for the kids and parents to see. I get some parents that want me to print them pictures for them which I do. Most of the kids have used the site to download pictures for screen savers for their home computers. Its really fun. I too didn't want to get under the net because I didn't feel I could have used flash and the 717 without it would be to noisy at 800.

Roger Wrote,

I am curious John. The first thing that caught my eye in the photo was the shadow. It seems the distance between the camera lens and the flash had a considerable offset. So this is some slaved unit. Just wondering.

Do you think the module for Minolta SLRs will work with the Promaster? I just bought the promaster for my 707, but would love to be able to use it with my Minolta SLR too. Helps justify the price to my husband ;-).

John, what a tremendous attitude! At 60 you are hardly a worn out Sr. citizen, lol. Your shots are amazing and it is nice to see someone shooting photos for others without any personal gain other than the satisfaction. I have been trying to make the transition to pro since April, but I can tell you that since money got involved in photography it has gotten a lot more complicated and taken some fun out of it.
