Ok all, I have been reading this forum for months and have finally decided to post a couple of pictures for some feedback. I am really looking for technique feedback. The "nice pic" or "crappy pic" feedback doesn't help. I am learning thru books and using this forum for some interaction. Look away and tell me what I am doing wrong.

I am using a Canon D60 with 50mm f/1.4 lens. I am using the Flash WB on the Camera. I have a light camera Right and a Fill light Camera Left.

Anybody else got a comment?

My first comment is please save as a .jpg file. Your .gif files are over 200KB, a .jpg file would be about 40KB and look better. Remember not everyone has a fast connection.

Second comment is the background is very distracting. Move further away or blur in Photoshop.

The subject looks bored and unsure of what he should be doing. Props will help with this. (ie, baseball bat, model plane, golf club, balls, etc.) Start with something he plays with all the time. Tell a story about this time in his life. Do we learn anything about him.

When I photograph kids I try to imagine their mom and dad 50 years from now and reminiscing about their youth and their now adult son's childhood. Does the photo evoke memories and stories from that period of the child's life? It shouldn't be a static photo of the child it should tell a story. My favorite picture of myself is a picture of me at around three years of age with my little toy model of the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang car. I found it when I was in my 30's and it immediately flooded me with memories of that time in my life. It's all about creating a connection.

Lastly, the lighting is nice and well exposed. I'd personally like a little more drama. Shadows on the background, edge or hair light.

Hope this helps,

Ted W.

I know this is knit-picking, but, in the squat pix, The background is too well focused and try putting plywood, masonite, anything to keep his feet from sinking into the background material. GOOD photo though.

In the standing pix, I find the shadow on his right lip distracting. Try adding some fill with a reflector.

I am looking into some lighting also. What do you mean you are using flash WB on the camera ? What kind of flashes are you using ?

Well I would have to say that my goal is not to aspire to K mart level photography. I am currently in a very small space and am trying to learn as much as possible. I can tell by your comment that your mentality is slightly below the Costco developing representatives and that you have no interest in helping aspiring young photographers.

I tend to stick to giving honest and positive feedback whether it is negative or not. Snide remarks are for children and I believe we are all adults here...Well at least I am.

If you are attempting to shoot images that look like a K-mart
protrait studio, you are almost there.

Melanie.

Thanks for your feedback. I was wondering what you hate about the backgrround. Is it too bright, IMO I think it is too bright and in focus. I have a very limited space so I will try to get the subject further away.

Hate the background.
The lighting looks good, however.
Why are you saving them as gif? You're loosing a lot of colors by
doing this. Gif format is for graphics... try jpeg and your photos
online will look much better.
Good eye contact .
Skin tones... nothing washed out and no blown highlights.

Yes, too bright... and needs to be out of focus... that would help a great deal.
