James,

CD-RW prices have made it very cosy efficient to add one to any system, you see deals and rebates in virtually every store in the $50 or less range. A great many of these drives are made by Lite-on which rates very high.

The newest will not likely be the most reasonable prices. For example you will pay more for a 52x drive than a 48x drive, you most likely will never see the difference in speed. DVD-Rw drives are expensive but allow you to back up a lot more data, next year these may be in the $50 range as well.

James,

I installed the TDK VeloCD 40x CDRW drive last night in my Windows XP Pro machine with 448 MB RAM and a Pentium III 733 processor. I am VERY happy with it. I was burning full data CDs in about 5 minutes. Best of all, you can find these drives VERY cheap, and usually with a rebate. I highly recommend this site:

Also, I buy alot of my PC hardware from:

http://www.compuplus.com

Hope that helps!

I have been a Plextor fan for several years and I own three of their drives. However, recently I had a chance to get a TDK VeloCD real cheap and I hav found that this drive works very well indeed.

Recently, CompUSA had the 48x internal drive for $39! You can still get this drive at BestBuy for $49. I believe the actual drive is made by Lite On.

I agree with another poster that you are unlikely to see much overall burn time difference between a 48x and a 52x.

plextor is overly expensive and unnecessary.

Stick with lite-on and tdk and you're good to go. Good quality for great price (about $50). I'm not one to skimp on quality either.. so I didn't buy it just because it's cheap =p I have yet to burn a coaster.

Get one from microcenter.com. Right now they are having a sale on buslink 52x24x52, which is fastest burner right now for $19.00 after $30.00 rebate. The buslink is usually a Liteon, I bought 48x24x48 and it was Liteon. Liteon is great for backing up protected games. Even if it isn't this is still a great price.
