Sorry for the delay in starting this challenge but there were several pressing matters that demanded my attention. Without further ado here is..... Challenge 7: Movie Poster

Don't let the title scare you, this should be a lot of fun and really stretch the creativity.

Required Subject: As the Advertising Director of a studio you are charged with creating an ad campaign to promote your latest film (either real or fictional). The primary tool for this promotion will be a movie poster, which will be plastered all over town by your loyal cadre of street urchins and out-of-work bicycle messengers.

Challenge Period: Sunday, February 2nd, 2003 until 8 PM PST on Monday, February 16th, 2003. All photos must be taken and movie posters submitted during this time period.

Rules: There will be no limitation to creativity or the use of photo editing software, however all primary images must be taken with an Olympus digital or dSLR camera during the challenge period. You are being placed on your honor, please don't abuse the trust.

How To Enter: Rename your poster to the title of your movie. Email a total of one challenge poster and/or up to two exhibition posters to [email protected] by 8 PM PST on February 16th, 2003. Please, ONE poster per email. You MUST put "challenge" or "exhibition" in the subject line when submitting photos to indicate which gallery your image should be posted. Please be kind, make sure the poster you submit is the FINAL version and if possible email well in advance of the deadline. Entries should provide:

1) Title of Movie
2) Olympus Digicam model
3) Name of photographer (dpreview nickname is fine)
4) Description, A short description of your movie. (optional)

Please make sure you provide the information listed above in a clear manner. Remember, it is not always possible to determine your name or nickname from your email address so make sure you provide either your real name or your nickname.

About Sizing: All entries should be exactly 600x800. Portrait orientation only.

As per previous challenges the challenge gallery will remain hidden until the voting period begins. During the voting period photographers names/nics will be hidden.

Challenge rules can be found at:

http://www.pbase.com/otfchallenge/challenge7

Also keep in mind that many of us will want to know how you did this so keep track of the settings and process as you create your masterpiece. I'm not asking that you submit this information with the entries so that we are clearly judging the final product and not the methodology. As they say, there is more than one way to skin a cat but let's not get hung up on that.

This will be the last challenge exceeding El-See's great 12 day challenge suggestion. The period is longer to accommodate my work schedule and still get the challenge started, I hope you'll understand.

wheeee so this would be another super challenge for me since I can not work with editors..... well... let's see ;-(

The entry period isn't long enough, because I have to figure out how PSE works before I can enter anything... :(

But I'll keep an eye on the galleries and do my duty and vote...

It's gonna be a lotta work in editing programs for this one, and seein' as to how I don't know any of that stuff I have to pass as well. But I reckon the entries/gallery will be very very interesting .. Good luck to all.
Cheers,

Just want to move this to the top and remind people that although graphic editors make certain things very easy to do that doesn't mean you have to use one to participate.

There are no limitations on the genre or age of the film. Nor was it specified that this need be a flashy blockbuster with lots of special effects. You might want to keep that in mind when you are planning out your poster.

there is still no direct link from the pbase gallery page to challenge 7. maybe you can change that?

mmmm not really a lot examples to look at yet ;-(

it is soooo difficult

If anyone needs some ideas to get motivated, I suggest going to a search place like Google and type in 'movie posters'. There are tons of places that have posters for sale, but you can click around and see all kinds of examples.

An un-named person previously posted that he/she didn't know Photoshop, but elsewhere in the forum posted a message about adding text to a photo (ring any bells?). As a minimum, all you need is your photo and a title - No Excuses!

Ok, fixed the challenge not showing up in the gallery listings.

I don't think there will be a lot of (if any) entries in the exhibition gallery. We'll see. As for examples skip gave a really good suggestion.

Excellent idea Skip. With all the links that come up you can see practically every movie poster ever made.

Well in fact I hear a slight ringing sound. I 'suspect' the un-named person referred to 'may' be me. * If * this is the case then let me say, I can't recall posting I didn't know 'Photoshop', I made reference to editing. I did offer an opinion on adding text to a photo in another thread, something I learned in Publisher some time back before I even owned a camera. I don't believe in making 'Excuses' for not participating in a Challenge, I was simply stating a 'Reason' I believed would make any entry by me uncompetitive.
Cheers,
jack

I'm not sure that I really understand the distinction between the two. However, I think the winning entry will have a combination of good photography and creative poster design. If it comes down to you slapping a great photo into a crappy poster or taking a so-so picture and carefully placing it into the most amazing poster I'd ever seen I think I would personally vote for the latter. Each voter will make that determination for themselves though.
Question . . . are we going for a 'real' poster look or is this
more about the photo and the 'so called' perfection of the photo?
In other words, are we wide open to be creative or is this a
technical photo'thing'. Do you understand my point? Not sure if I
am making myself clear or not.
