Photosuite, bundled with my DSC-S70, takes a collossal nerve approach and lays claim to all JPEG and TIFF files on your computer. It changes the file associations for .jpe, .jpeg, .jpg, and .tif file types. In doing so, it attaches its own icon to them.

Then, a few hours or perhaps days later when you discover that this program is not worth having and uninstall it, you will not regain the associations. The keys will not be replaced in the registry.

So you will have to do a registry edit - something that puts me on edge!

But if you insist on installing Photosuite, first bring up Regedit.exe (in the Windows folder) and export the keys for these file types from

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

Then when you unstall it (and you will) it will be much easier to fix the registry by simply importing the keys back in.

My thanks to Peter van Dam for his post that gave me the clues to track down this problem.

hi pete,

thanks very much for the info but alas its 3 months too late. I installed phtosuite together with the driver and like you said all pix files associated themselves to photosuite, uninstallation is too tedious so i just left it be. dw

SONY MUST CONSIDER BUNDLING SOME OTHER FRIENDLIER SOFTWARE FOR FUTURE PRODUCTS.

You don;t have to go to all this trouble, it is a very simple to change what program opens files. AS FOLLOWS
If you want a certain program of your choice to open picture files
do this---- 1 open explorer
2 open folder with picture files
3 highlight pic file
4 hold shift key and right click on highlighted pic file
5 a box will open with (open with) in it, cliché open with

6 another box will appear called (open with) with a list of programs to use, check the little box that reads "always use this program to open this type of file and highlite the program you want to use and hit OK. Good luck Rich

I would vote for Ulead's PhotoImpact. It does a lot os stuff well and is inexpensive enough to bundle with a digicam.

Hee... another "victim" here. Had a good time uninstalling the program, changing all the associations & changing the icons too.

Alas this is an all to common problem! cheap chinzey so called free software bundled with hardware products!!

I have never found any of it to be worth installing and a makers of such software that change file associations without at least giving you the choice should be shot :^)

You only need to install the USB driver to download you pics of your S70. After instalation of the driver when you connect your camera to your computer it just shows up as an extra drive and you can use your file manager to move your files around.

Okay Rich that sounds easy. Just one question, Rich, anybody. HOW DO i UNINSTALL PHOTOSUITE WITHOUT LOSING ALL MY PHOTOS THAT ALREADY HAVE THAT PHOTOSUITE ICON? Does using rich's method of changing what opens the pics protect them from Photosuite for a clean uninstall or do the pics go bye bye. Or if I back the pics up on a zip or cd, 1) the open with changed the icon, I'm backing up to be safe. 2) Open with didn't change the icon but I'm getting rid of Photosuite anyway with the pics on backup, when I put the backup on hardrive will I be able to open them with Photoshop, lets say? ]:-( Count [ I hope ya get what I mean.]

Not to worry useing the process only changes the icon pic and does not delete any pic files. and uninstalling a editing program will not effect the pic files either. Good luck Rich

And you can use whatever JPEG viewer is on your computer to have an immediate look at them. I think Win98 comes with a Kodak viewer.

But you should download the free viewer from

http://members.home.com/rsimmons/irfanview/english.htm

It's really good, so I sent the author $10 and still consider his program to be a fine gift. And there are lots of other freebies out there to play with until you decide what "professional" program to buy.

I think if you just uninstall Photosuite, and then use the re-association procedure outlined below by Rich, there may still be an issue with instant previews as you select JPEG files in a folder.

I think Photosuite removed a sub-folder from the registry named ExShell.

You can add that back in manually. Or if your OS is Win98 I can E-mail you with an attachment that contains the sub-folder ready for import into the registry. Might be the same for Win95 but I can't verify that. All bets are off for Win2K.

I already have Adobe Photoshop, PS and ACDSEE. I guess these will be fine!??

I find Adobe Photoshop deluxe to be very easy! PS is way too complicated for a newcomer like me.

Thanx guys

Rich, Okay I now have photoshop opening the pics. But the icon did not change, it's still that green blue yellow thing. Thats the photosuite icon isn't it. I thought they would change after picking photoshop to open them. Unless this is a jpg icon and then I was assuming wrong. So now I can uninstall without backing up the pics, being that they have that blue green yellow icon? Count

Rich, Aha! I uninstalled photosuite and then looked in explorer, the icons were still blue green yellow [photosuite], but the open with box appeared and I picked photoshop and the icons changed to photoshop. All looks okay. Thanks Count

Yes, these should be good for viewing & editing your pics.

Erm... Adobe Photoshop deluxe? Don't you mean Adobe PhotoDeluxe instead? I never seen anybody describe PhotoShop as "very easy"! :)
