Did Olyboy get banned or....

For the record, please notice that the
UZi in OlyGuy's sig is pixel-for-pixel the same as olyboy's.
The pixels they are true. I love the pixels. They are why we are hear.

I will try to exhibition some pixels soon, for your help.

We should discuss the pixels and not the fan clubs.

yes that's the problem..then once you identify the person, you can only report that person...but my guess is by now, that person should have understood that he is not welcome...big difference..he can't hide under Phil's shadow anymore.
is he lurking ? Lets hope he is gone for good and forum can get
back to its old self.

Guys: this kind of thing is endemic in all the forums I've ever been associated with. Pull someone's chain or dope a post with something inflammatory and the whole thing is going to flame. "Bannings" or even 'voluntary retreats' used as time-outs work best because the context is gone when the individual re-appears.

Look at it like a Karma cycle; they can and sometimes do learn for the next reincarnation. No-one who really cares about an online forum need sulk or be banned for long and I don't think it is necessary for amateur psychiatrists to make any diagnosis other than a temporary Hysteria.
Forget it for now and let the dust settle or it will only drive you crazy.
John.

I am a newbie trying to learn how to make good photos. From my perspective the pure venom of commentary was way out proportion to what this harmless eccentric had to say. At least his remarks were not obscene as so many are in the mob vendetta.

He did not turn me away - but could have if I had a one-on-one with him. Fortunately he is a drop in the bucket of negativity. Its easy it is to rant at someone in the safety of cyber anonymity. No one will knock on your door.

Unfortunately this whole side show has revealed many more drops posing as guardians of new members. As a newbie I feel used. I think this moral high ground taken on behalf of members such a myself by the the self appointed "guardians" was a pretext to justify this cyberspace mob lynching. Or at least a cursing by bell, book and candle. Sad to say, for awhile there I was pulled along with the pack, so I am no innocent.

I doubt that I will ever post a photo (if I ever get to that point). There are too many sharks in this forum for this guppy.

And yes...the clinically indignant will no doubt slander me with outrage mixed with condescension and challenge my right to a contrary opinion or archly inform me that if I don't like what takes place here to get out.

Having said all that, hopefully Olyboy will not read this and start...sending me messages!

You should post a photo if you're so inclined.

Take your own advice and don't get involved in our little drama if it upsets you. If you don't feel comfortable sharing your work because you feel you will be mistreated then you probably don't belong here. Why associate with people you don't trust?

Your own words, you're a newbie. So trust me. We have had our share of "voice of reason" threads. We have enough martyrs already. Your efforts at martyrdom will go largely unnoticed. Not because we don't care. It's just that yours will be a face in the crowd.

There are many nice, helpful, decent people out here who happen to be extraordinary photographers, and who delight in sharing their knowledge. Why would you want do disassociate yourself from such an incredible resource?

Trust me, share your work just once. Nobody is going to roast you.

Kind Regards

It sometimes takes "newbies" to set flamings like this in perspective; and it certainly seemed as you described it there to me - an occasional visitor here. 'Olyboy' was often amusing, often irritating, but also informative - IOW interesting. People go off the rails sometimes and they certainly don't need egging-on or trolling when they do.
Let it rest and learn from it for next time.
John.

Huh....???

Martydom???

I never said anything about disassociation. Nor was I implying that there are not helpful people to the extreme. It just seems to me that there are quite a few that are oriented toward ridicule. For the time being I think I will stick with lurking.

Don't worry about feeback from posting your photos. I have posted many and have always received polite and quite useful feedback. when it comes to photos everyone is great, when it comes to other issues, we sometimes get a little passionate. Don't let that stop you, it hasn't stopped me :)

Watching this all unfold is a course in human nature. The mob mentality can bring out the uglier side of it, and as the mob takes on a life of it's own, people who might normally turn the other cheek end up being sucked up into the frenzy and display a rather unpleasant side of themselves. Not that it's a display of their "true colors", because most of the people on this forum are good people, but rather the mob with it's own dynamic brings out that little bit of 'bad' that's part of each person's good/bad mix. It's ugly. There have been times that I've felt compelled to jump in on either 'side' of the issues, but fortunately have been able to refrain. Especially since once the mob gains momentum, that momentum can become unpredictable and change direction at any time. When it comes down to "you're either with us or against us" it's time to stand clear.

Darn! I tried to not comment on any of this, but so many of the points you raised rang true, and somehow my fingers just started typing on impulse.

Hopefully everyone's pressure relief valve has released enough of what has built up and this place will return to normalcy, I hope so at least.

lurking? but lurking means reading and not posting...right? what camera do you have? I would love to see your photos and hear your opinion on your camera.

In any case, welcome and I am sure you will find some valuable resources if you ask.
