I just got my latest MacWorld (March issue 2003 page 86) mag in the mail and was surprised to see that a camera dealer is advertising the Nikon D2X!!!!!! and the new D2H!!!
Does anyone have any spec info on these new models???

PS. I will not give the name of the dealer just in case they are doing this as a stunt to get us to call.

It's fake, no official announcement yet. If any information is leaked, it's bound to spread on the internet faster than any other source of information.

A lot of the NYC scam dealers have the D2x/D2h listed. Look at the other prices in the ad. Are they astoundingly low? Is the dealer in NYC? These are the common scam artists like Broadway, A&M, Abe's of Maine (in NYC!), etc. Don't believe anything they print.

I am surprised to hear that scam artists are so easily identifiable, like having proper shop names.

MacMall isn't a scammer. They are a reputable supplier that has been around for a while. Kind of the premier Mac supplier. Same company as PCMall. I guess they are just trying to get a head start on the market, but I am kind of curious where they got their info from. As for some of those NY sources, yeah, I wouldn't trust them further than I can spit.

Uh, I agree. But why are we talking about MacMall? The original poster said nothing about MacMall. He mentioned that the ad was in his MacWorld magazine. Did I miss something?

Ok, maybe I jumped the gun a bit by proclaiming this a scam, but I've seen ads from the usual disreputable NYC dealers with the D2x/D2h listings and assumed the original poster had seen the same. I could be wrong about what he saw, but I doubt it...

I just lifted this link which Mike Sturk posted in Rob Galbraith's

Carol,

Great article, thanks for the link ..Phil should have articles like this on a "camera purchase beware" page somewhere on this site! I had a horrible experience with one of the NY establishments, this one located in my home town (Brooklyn), here's the link to my post(my first in the dpreview forums actually) on the issue 2.2 years ago.

..over 2 years ago mirrors the information uncovered by this investigation! In the last post I was only on the first page of the article but wow, it's like my story all over again. Brooklyn stores, bates and switches...alias websites....amazing! I am so glad I was able to get away from those jerks with only a 25$ shipping and handling charge to return the stuff back to them (yeah I could have complained about that but I had all the rest of the over $2,000 back and felt that I owed them at most that much for shipping the stuff to me in the first place.) Anyway...the stuff I got from J and R was top rate and still working fine today!

The ad is from Broadway Photo. . . so we can all forget about this, now, can't we?

They're easily identifiable for advertising cameras that haven't been announced by the manufacturer, advertising cameras for way below dealer cost, and being well known bait-and-switch artists. I'm not sure where this "proper shop names" issue came from.

The "premier Mac supplier" has a lifetime rating of 5.71 out of 10 on the reseller ratings web site?

http://www.resellerratings.com/seller1554.html

Are you perhaps confusing them with "Mac Warehouse", who has an 8.78? They are the same folks who run "PC warehouse", and I have delt with them in the past.

Here's some people that I deal with regularly, that could really be considered "premier".

B&H 9.15
Cuicial Technology 9.88
NewEgg.com 9.61
KEH 10.0

I've always had good dealings with KEH, but do note that they really don't have enough reviews to have a statistically significant rating.

Ciao!

Joe
