I'm a regular user of AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) and to a lesser extent, Yahoo Messenger. I also signed up once with MSN chat which I rarely use.

All of those tools have the ability to set up semi-private rooms.

A number of near-realtime "conversations" (both on and off-topic) take place here that might be better suited to such an environment.

Is there any interest in setting up an informal "Oly Talk" chat room using one of these services? If so, which service would be preferred?

I us AOL myself, but I don't think I could get in a chat room.
I just type so slow that I would never be able to get a word in.

I'd opt for Yahoo or ICQ.... I hate all things proprietary So AIM is the chat version of Sony to me....LOL

So how is that different?

As an aside, I heard recently that AOL was awarded a patent on "instant messaging"... there may be a shakeout/legal issues in the offing.

I have used... ICQ,MSN, & Yahoo instant messaging... don't like chat rooms.. Like Hube said..he can't type fast enough (o: (Hube, take some lessons from my 79 year old dad.. with two fingers He types faster than me with all ten.. LOL) ... I just get dizzy tryin' to read it all tryin' to figure out who is responding to who.. lol... Guess ya could just do a search on an email to add to your list(if you knew what the email/user name was. I come from a good sized family... we sometimes have 5 of us conferenced together.. gets a little hectic with everyone typing at once... but the "smiley's" are worth it..LOL especially the pfffft one... Actually, IRC is really the thing best-suited to this kind of thing,
IMO. But don't get your hopes up in any event. It's been my
experience that most folks that participate in public forums like
this one have little interest in real-time conversations.

I actually briefly considered setting up an IRC channel for just such
a purpose. Then I remembered "Oh yeah... been there, done that.
Didn't work."

There ya go... That'll be another reason I can't stand anything AOL, although I liked ICQ before AOL bought it and they didn't do much to change it afterwards but I guess if I must choose than Yahoo gets My pick.... LOL

Heh, well, IRC had Instant Messaging before AIM ever existed so they should be awarded the patent not AOL.

I'm new to the 5050 board, don't have a 5050, but might get one.

If there's going to be a chat operation, I would prefer On the Yahoo Olympus5050photogroup.

No can do. That group was set up to specifically talk about the 5050.

There are also yahoo groups for the C2100 and C700. While each Yahoo group has its own "built-in" chat room, I wouldn't want appear to have "invaded" and taken over their group, especially if it happens that the majority of people that show up own a different model.

I use AIM, but mostly only for helping a computer tech in a remote location to solve computer problems. It's great when you need to send URL's and commands back and forth, since you can just cut and paste them, and you don't have to worry about them hearing you incorrectly, like with the phone.
