What accessories would you / do you use?

I was thinking about a circular polarizer, Neutral Density, and something for IR(don't know which yet, 87C?).

What brand do you use? Is it multi-coated or not?

Is there any degradation in image quality when using a step-up ring? I was thinking 49mm to 55mm but don't want any vignetting etc.

No teleconvertor for me at this time. I'm still in awe of the 10x zoom (a big step up from 2x!!)

Any comments on flashes and flash brackets? How about a studio setup with UZI hooked up to a computer?

Most people suggest getting a UV filter right away to protect the lens. I spend a good amount of time switching teleconverters on and off, so I don't use one (and hopefully will never have to live with the consequences).

Since they are so cheap, get a DPS-9000. Heck, get two.

Get a SM reader, and free yourself from Camedia.

You will soon get addicted to zoom, buy an A200.

For close ups, the B Macro seems to be a popular choice.

If you hang out here long enough, you will buy an R72 IR filter.

A cheap tripod couldn't hurt.

Sooner or later you'll buy a flash, the Vivitar models seem popular here.

You've gone too far when you buy the E100RS.

Have fun and don't let the SO look too closely at the credit card bills.

Funny, I thought this would be much hotter than it ended up being... but in any case, I'll add my input. Hope it doesn't get lost amongst the droves of posts!

I got my camera about a month ago, and soon, the race was on to find my accessories. Ironically enough, my first accessory wasn't purchased at all, it was borrowed - a 32mb card from the D-490Z package I got my mom for Christmas. She didn't miss it (in fact, she says she's afraid to touch the camera... that's technology fear for ya!) and I instantly wanted more. While I didn't get a 128mb card until about a week ago when they went on sale, this is probably the first accessory I'd reccomend.

Actually, get a lense cap teather first. $1.41 from Cameragear.com - I lost mine, and while replacements are only a buck, I'll forever miss the beautiful "Olympus" lettering.

The next guy in line would definately be a UV filter, but your question seems to be pointing towards "which of these should I get?" so I'll go there.

I picked up a circular polarizer (Hoya purple) and both an ND2 and ND4 within close proximity of eachother, and the one I'd reccomend most would be the Polarizer.

Even though my Uzi had big problems with getting sky without noise, I did see the merit of a polarizer almost as soon as I got it. Of course, there's the "cut the glass reflection" part of them, which is good in some situations, but the biggest thing I liked was how it brought better colors out of EVERYTHING in daylight. I could actually see the concrete go from overexposure to detail-rich when I twisted the filter using spot metering on another subject, but the subject had enough true lighting not to have the camera bring the exposure up a bit. The sky turned a darker blue, more vibrant I'd assume (my camera gave every sky a nice coat of noise), and it helped stop those evil spot reflections off objects that have curved surfaces. Other than my UV filter, my Polarizer gets the most use.

The ND2 does virtually nothing for cutting the light, but I didn't know the ND scale well when I got it. It's pretty much like a UV filter that absorbs 1/1000000 of an F stop. The ND4 takes up a bit more light; significant enough for most people, but not enough for my uses (getting full-daylight pan actions). I've got an ND8 on order, which will actually cut a significant enough amount of light (I hope!) to actually be useful. If you want to cut F-stops, get one - I know how the 1/800th limit (or higher in program mode, which isn't aperature priority) can hurt when you want a shallow depth of field in bright light, so an ND8 really could be useful for that. Or slow the shutter speeds, like for daylight pan-action or motion blur - if any of this sounds appealing to you, throw together $13 bucks and grab one from Cameragear.com .

IR - this is one I've got in reserves until I really understand my camera in the "normal world" (oh, and the check book goes into the positives a bit :). My uzi-friend and I have thought about the possibilities, and have some ideas for stuff we'll do when we get the filters, but not for a while.

If you havn't noticed, I use Hoya filters exclusively. I'm an all-or-nothin' guy, and I looked for one brand that made good, inexpencive filters before I even got my camera, and Hoya seemed to be the choice. All but my polarizer (which could be) are multicoated. I have yet to see any advantage of multicoated first-hand, but I believe the people on this forum that say it's worth it.

I have a 49-55mm step up ring, and have put it on my Uzi just for sh'ts and giggles, and I saw no vingetting. If one 49mm filter won't cause vingetting, I doubt something half the width (in the possible vingetting zome) would do it.

I'd reccomend you look into teleconverters... soon. Right now, there are two unbelievable deals for tele lenses that won't last - first, Oly Emporium has the C-210 for $39.99, and second, (here's the world exclusive), there are several TCON-14s on ebay right now for "buy it now" $19.99 plus $1.99 shipping. They are listed as "Olympus 1.45x Tele Converter Lens for Dig" (or something very close) and have the wrong picture for the lens, but the nice little tele lense I've got sitting in my bag from the same auction a week ago is definately a TCON-14.

Flashes are not important to me yet. I've got a little hand-flash made out of a discarded one-time-use camera and a D-battery for multi-flash exposures, but other than that I don't have any want (or money) for an external flash.

One last reccomendation - as stated by my predecessor to replying, get a DPS 9000. They are cheap right now, and putting one on my Uzi gave be a smile almost as big as the day I bought the camera itself. I will NEVER go back, but I will be going back to Best Buy to buy another.

Sorry about such a long-winded reply. I wish you big paychecks and lots of fun buying new toys for your camera!

Not that this is UZI specific but... I got a pack of PDA screen protectors, they're adhesive matte finish thin plastic film sheets, and trimmed and covered both the preview screen and the "I'll call it the control window"... Slightly distorts the focus of the preview but is easily replaceable and prevents scratches...

Unda,

You could fill Pandora's Box with all the stuff that's out there to make your UZI do tricks! Some of it falls into the 'essential' category; some is 'highly desirable'; and much more is stuff you might want to use sometime! :) There can be a wide range of prices for many items. Get the best you can afford but remember that the best is sometimes not the most expensive. Let your pocketbook and recommendations of others be your guides. Bear in mind that before last June, I had never even heard of an UZI! ;)

Let me say this first: the UZI 'as is' can take superb pictures under a wide range of conditions. The only absolute requirement, IMHO, is a UV filter to protect the lens.

For the 'basic starter' kit, a bag; Circular Polarizer; lens tether; extra Smartmedia cards; 2 extra sets of rechargeable batteries; Lens Pen; and a card reader for easy transfer to the PC.

Here's what I have for my UZI:

Lowepro Nova Mini carry bag. (I also have a larger Ambico for all the other stuff.) Treated with spray-on water repellant.

B-300 telex.....requires 49
A-200 telex....49 mm fits right on the camera.
W-Con 0.8 wide angle lens....55 mm.

UV; Circular Polarizer; ND-2; Graduated ND; R-72 InfraRed; and various other filters. Most are Hoya; some are Qauntaray.

Tripod- Inexpensive Ambico.....I need a better one. Lots to choose from; many prefer Manfrotto. Ball heads are considered best by many.

Monopod - Quantaray Titan II; great pod at a very reasonable price that suits me very well.

3 x 128 meg. Smartmedia cards; 2 x 64's; original 8 meg.

Lexar Smartmedia card reader.

4 sets of rechargeable batteries. Get highest mah.....at least 1700's. (The DPS-9000 is a great accesssory and available at a good price.....I need to pick one up while they're on sale at Best Buy)

2 x Rayovac 3-in-1 chargers; Rayovac 1 hour charger with DC lighter plug-in. (never used the one that comes with the camera)

Digi-Slave flash. Not as good as the much more expensive flash units but adequate for many situations and much cheaper. The sky's the limit if you want to get into studio lighting, or you can do some very inexpensive stuff with ordinary hardware lights. I shoot mostly outdoors so I haven't gotten into the interior lighting.......yet.

Not directly connected to the camera, but editing software closes the deal. I use Paint Shop Pro 7 which has most of the features of the more expensive PhotoShop7, but PS is the industry standard. If starting over, I would probably have gone with PS Elements 2. Many more tutorials and plug ins available.

100 MB Zip Drive for transferring photos from the laptop to the PC after a trip. When away from home, downloading to the laptop each evening keeps me from having to budget my Smartmedia cards so much. There are other options, such as an external hard drive; external CD burner (what I really want); Image Tank portable storage; etc.

And, last but not least, a spare UZI!!!!.

As you can see, the options are almost endless and you can expect to spend as much for accessories as you paid for the camera, a lot more if you want to!!!

As a last suggestion: don't buy it all at once. Add what you think you need and shop carefully; ask questions here; and enjoy what the 'basic' UZI can do.

Regards,
****:)

accessory that truely improves the EVF view & will always find it's way on any camera I'll ever own (or at least something like it), is the Orion eyepiece. http://makeashorterlink.com/?B20223002 Can't beat it for the elimination of peripheral light leakage into the EVF since the Uzi has absolutely nothing around the eyepiece.

I liked it even better than the e100rs eyepiece & have one on both of my cameras.

The Hoya r72 IR filter is also a good choice & if I'm not mistaken is one of the cheaper IR filters to boot ( http://www.2filters.com )

It produces a pink tint but levels or desaturation usually takes care of it if removal is your preference. I rather like the tint to some degree.

The consensus pic for lens protection is a Multi-coated UV. I myself am not a big fan of coatings since they're difficult to clean & suffer some more sun flaring without it. A skyLight is also a decent choice for protection but has a slight warming effect which I find advantageous on grey, overcast days.

Oly Emporium is running a decent deal on C-210 tele-converters which probably means they won't be available much longer & @ $40 is well worth it inspite of the unavoidable vignetting. The leather holster they're selling aint a bad choice either.

And A good polorizer for those bright sunny days. They're also dark enough to serve the purpose of an ND too, so you can get a graduated ND instead of a regular ND to optimize your expenses...

I'm also a believer in stepping up to 55mm filters for the prevention of vignetting @ full wide, which doesn't neccessarily happen with all Uzi's but did with mine with just one 49mm filter & most assuredly will if a stack is involved.

If a true Macro isn't readily available ya might want to try a Close-up set which can be had pretty cheap & consist of 3 filters, +1, +2, & +4 or maybe get just the +10 But DOF will be trickier than with a true Macro lens & often with the close-up set the final, fine tune focus is easiest achieved with slight physical movement of the camera closer or farther from the subject after the halfpress (The Orion helps with this).

I just got a DPS9000 & haven't had a chance to use it but have several sets of 1600mah batteries for each of my cameras along with the RayoVac 1 hour charger... I suggest 1800mah or better since they're pretty common and cheap now... http://www.newegg.com has IPower 2100's for $12 a set too. They seem to work well.

Needless to say an extra 128mb or two SM cards & the B-300 goes without saying as definate good choices. But it's all subjective & YMMV...

Me & My UZI, Strollin Down The Avenue. Me & My UZI, Focusin On Somethin New. To 'UZe' Or Not To 'UZe'? That 'IS' The Question.

That's the kind of answer I'm looking for. It's not long winded at
all.
Couldn't find the tether. This will be the next thing I get (got
the 128mb mem card 2 days before getting the camera)
http://www.cameragear.com/lenscaps.asp

Down at the bottom. I got the #1, but if you want the cover to hang from your lens, get the #2.
Too bad about the sky noise. I haven't had time to play with mine
yet (just got it) but can't tolerate any noise. How did you get
around this problem, or did you just come to accept it as a part of
lilfe with the UZ?
Good lord no, I did not learn to accept it! The noise was so heavy, it ruined almost all my images. Add in a hot pixel, the stuck ISO and Macro bugs from my old firmware, and a couple other problems... and it got a ticket right to OlyWEST. It should be on it's way home any day now.
Have you used the TCON-14? C-2100uz isn't mentioned as being
compatible. Neither is the C-210 for that matter.
It fits. I have yet to use it more than just holding it to the lenses of my mom's D-490Z and my friend's Uzi, but by all accounts it looks the business. Grab a 49-46mm step down ring, glue it to the TCON (the clip adapter isn't my bag, baby) and you can practically leave the lens on the camera. About half useable zoom, light, virtually no light reduction... and hey, glue a 58-55mm step down ring on the front of it, and you can stack a C-210 (with 55-52 step down), TL-55, or B-300 without problem. I look foreward to a lot of use with that lens.
Does this thing need a tripod, or is it just an added feature that
it has a thread for one on the bottom to replace the one it takes
up on the camera?
You don't need a tripod at all... in fact, it only weighs a slight bit more than a set of AA batteries alone. You can leave the AAs in for when the DPS dies, and get the longest possible useage - but even then, it's not going to break your arms. The tripod socket on the bottom (which is metal, yay!) is just incase you want to use the camera on a tripod or monopod.

One thing I forgot to mention but UZ'P'Shoot'ERS brought to my attention is that Orion rubber eye guard. I got mine the other day, and must say - even though I've only tried my Friend's uzi with one on it, it's incredible. Perfect seal, nice and comfy, and it even allows you to use your left eye with the EFV and not smudge the LCD with your nose. A must-have.

Did the TCON from ebay come boxed and with the regular stuff included (lens caps, bag, step up ring) that normally would come with it? I shot off an email to ask if it was genuine but haven't heard back yet.

What accessories would you / do you use?

I was thinking about a circular polarizer, Neutral Density, and
something for IR(don't know which yet, 87C?).
On the UZI, you can get buy with a linear polarizer, but if you want a coated lens, you have to go with the circular. The R72 seems to be a popular filter for IR. So far I haven't needed a full ND filter, though I usually use the polarizer in full sunlight which has the effect of blocking some light. I just got a Hitech grad filter and a Cokin P holder for sunsets, but I haven't used it yet.
What brand do you use? Is it multi-coated or not?

Is there any degradation in image quality when using a step-up
ring? I was thinking 49mm to 55mm but don't want any vignetting
etc.
Well a step-up ring is just air, there is no lens involved. I can put 1 filter on the UZI with vignetting, so I usually take off the UV filter when I use other filters.
No teleconvertor for me at this time. I'm still in awe of the 10x
zoom (a big step up from 2x!!)
That may be, but my daughter was playing tennis with her cousin today, and I could only shoot from the visiters gallery (4 tennis courts over, 2nd story shooting through a window), and I wished I had more reach than the A-200 gave me.
Any comments on flashes and flash brackets? How about a studio
setup with UZI hooked up to a computer?
Look at my flash FAQ:

http://www.the-meissners.org/olympus-flash.html

I like Promaster 5750DX flash with the Olympus TTL adapter that I got for $200. In the past, I have used the FL-CB04 cable and a cheap Kalimar 175A flash. I use the Stoboframe Stoboflip bracket that I mostly like.

If you want to see the various add-ons I have tried, my camera hacks page is at:

http://www.the-meissners.org/albums/camera-hacks/index.html

Be warned, you can go overboard (I probably have).

Can not add much with everything covered above from the Orion eyepiece to the Promaster flash to the spare Uzi!

On the filter question, here is a site at 2filter.com that shows a combination deal for a Hoya UV and a sunpack cir.pl for $38 at the 49mm size. Good site with everything you need for filters, etc. Good people in Conn., call Mon to Fri.. By the way free ship over $50.

I am a new UZI owner and have been a lurker on this site for many many months previous. What I quickly realized is that there are a ton of different and good accessories that can be added to this wonderful camera in multiple configurations and, that is one of the main resons I bought an UZI -flexability.

However, the key to using all of these accessories depends on the way you want to use the camera - indoors, potraits, out doors, wildlife, children, sports... My suggestion is to learn the camera first and understand it's strengths and challenges and add accessories to address those strengths and challenges as it pertains to the way you leverage the camera.

I started with the basics which are simular to other post in this thread and all totalled have cost me an additional $225 on top of the camera cost $399.

UZI and all accessories that came with the UZI
UV filter - HOYA HMC
Cir. Polarizer filter - HOYA HMC - Havn't used it yet (bad wheather still)
Camera bag -Tamrac Zoom 16 - light, easy to access, holds main accessories
Eye piece - rubber - as mentioned by others
128 mb card - Sandisk
Card reader - Smartdisk
Mack Extended warranty - 5yr
4 1800 Nimh Rechargabel Batteries
DPS 9000 - battery pack
Extra lense cap
Time - to learn

I am still learning this camera, I have taken 1000 shots and have only finshed reading half the manual. With those 1000 attempts I have learned a great deal of how I want to use the camera. There is so much more to learn that I am not ready to add other, more expensive accesories until I understand this camera's capabilities better. IMHO, the listing of items above are necessary in the beginning to give you the time you need to figure out what else you want.

I did leave out one major accessory that I just received this morning and that was a Promaster 5750 flash and Oly adapter (thanks to M. Meissner's help). I bought it because of an impending event that is important to me and the price was right $148 - otherwise, I probably wouldn't have bought an external flash for some time.

You just got your camera - so what are you doing on-line - GO SHOOT and show us you results.

Regards,

Stephen Z.
What accessories would you / do you use?

I was thinking about a circular polarizer, Neutral Density, and
something for IR(don't know which yet, 87C?).

What brand do you use? Is it multi-coated or not?

Is there any degradation in image quality when using a step-up
ring? I was thinking 49mm to 55mm but don't want any vignetting
etc.

No teleconvertor for me at this time. I'm still in awe of the 10x
zoom (a big step up from 2x!!)

Any comments on flashes and flash brackets? How about a studio
setup with UZI hooked up to a computer?

I can vouche for the SunPac... It's Not coated but alot better than the QuantaRay it replaced which separated under the preasure of the B-300... The SunPac gives no such hint of separating although I still don't trust it and never let go of the connection....LOL

Can not add much with everything covered above from the Orion
eyepiece to the Promaster flash to the spare Uzi!
On the filter question, here is a site at 2filter.com that shows a
combination deal for a Hoya UV and a sunpack cir.pl for $38 at the
49mm size. Good site with everything you need for filters, etc.
Good people in Conn., call Mon to Fri.. By the way free ship over
$50.

Me & My UZI, Strollin Down The Avenue. Me & My UZI, Focusin On Somethin New. To 'UZe' Or Not To 'UZe'? That 'IS' The Question.

Hey Rotor,

Thanks for the tip on the Tcon14. I bought the last one that was on Ebay. At least the last one today. For $20 you just cant beat it. I hear that the quality of the Tcon14 is pretty good. From what I have read it is better than the Tcon14b but has no usable zoom range. I can't wait to see for myself. Also what set down ring are you using. I am looking for one right now but I thought I would ask since you have the same setup. T

Rotor,

Quick question. Did the Tcon14 that you bought off of ebay come with any lens caps or bag? Even if it didn't come with these accessories it is still a hell of a deal.

Contents included the lens, box, both lens caps, a shitty little leather-like case, and an instruction page (I think) which I promptly lost. It's a true, NIB TCON14.

Yup, boxed with all the regular stuff... cept the step up ring was 43-46, when our Uzis need 49-46 step down. Still a damn good deal if you ask me...

Looks like those TCONs got licked right up as soon as I posted here! And now my friend wants one! Ack! :)

Did the TCON from ebay come boxed and with the regular stuff
included (lens caps, bag, step up ring) that normally would come
with it? I shot off an email to ask if it was genuine but haven't
heard back yet.

I received an email back from them a couple hours after I emailed them. They said the same thing, so I got the 2nd to last one on ebay!
Thanks for the tip :-)
