space shuttle re-entry

THis photo may be valuable information to NASA. Submit it to them.
I pretty much missed it, it caught me by suprise.. then an ERR 2.
I did get a few frames off though. It was a minute early, and now
they say they can't find it. I'm a bit worried about it!

Here's a shot, no crop from Dallas.

I looked at AP and Reuters agents in Europe, and all I see is videograbs with poor resulotion an sharpness.

Think you should call AP. Just an advice, good luck.

...but is there any chance we could see a larger version? You said
it isn't cropped, but resampled. A 100% crop would be great.

Damn... I gotta go shoot a basketball game. Kinda puts things in
perspective. :(

just been watching coverage on BBC News 24. they say that communication with the shuttle was lost over texas at 200000 feet. they don't expect anyone to survive.

tragic.

Actually, the speed is pretty accurate for that portion of the flight. At 20 min prior to landing the speed is around 15,000 at an altitude of around 44 miles up. It slows to around 8000 mph in the next 8 minutes of the re-entry. Putting it at 34 miles up at that point.

It then goes through a series of S-Turns that bleed off speed to get it to about 1700 mph. And around 85,000 ft.

It's speculation, but the fact that it was going so fast would point to a failure occurring somewhere in the phase of maximum heating during re-entry.

Terrible tragedy. :-(
Does anyone remember whether or not this is normal for the shuttles
when between 40-60 miles in altitude. How much speed do they need
to bleed off upon re-entry?

I cant wait to find out what they say happened in a few years.

Its too bad because I enjoyed watching the Nasa TV stuff about it
so much.

Murphy
still, giving the current world state (read Iraq problem here) it is strange that it should happen now.

This is always a potential problem. CNN also reported that they thought something might broken off during liftoff. Nobody will know for sure for some time, if at all.
Very sad.

From CNN website:

On launch day, a piece of insulating foam on the external fuel tank
came off during liftoff and was believed to have struck the left
wing of the shuttle. NASA said as late as Friday that the damage to
the thermal tiles was believed to be minor and posed no safety
concern during the fiery decent through the atmosphere.

NBC reported that the backup to Krista McCauliffe (sp?) who died in the Challenger disaster was doing practice landings this morning at Kennedy. She was supposed to fly in Columbia this November.
Sometimes the unexplainable.

On the 1 year anniversary of the WTC disaster, the NYS "pick 3"
lotto number was: 911.

Coincidence?
