G3 - What do you think you do not like most

The strap for the D60 says DIGITAL (or STEAL ME) in big bright letters.

Their straps used to be quite good.
Wow, the “G3 Ugly Ugly Ugly” thread is HOT! It’s the style of G3
that MogMan doesn’t like most, I believe. I would like to see what
other G3 users do not like most about G3 (hopefully Canon will be
able to improve them in G4 or future products). For me, got to be
the STRAP. I own some SLR and P & S cameras. They all come with
very good straps. But I am so disappointed with G3’s, it is rather
stiff, hard to wrap around the camera body. I have to spend some
extra time just to push it in camera bag.

What I don't like about the G3 is the little plastic door that covers the DC IN,A/V OUT, DIGITAL. (Doe this thing have a name?) Anyway, everytime I wanna upload pics to my Mac, it feels so cheap and bounches back, it iritates me. What I also don't like abvout the G3 is that you can't make a cup of coffee with it.

hi there, check out these past threads... they're not pretty, but they pretty much sums up what people don't like about the G3.

This thread shows just how great the Canon cameras are. If the only things we have to complain about are so petty, then I think Canon has done a pretty d@mn good job.

"So, what part of your Ferrari 550 Maranello do you like least?"

"Well, when I'm going 180 on the autobahn and I need to change the radio station, it takes 2 seconds long than I think it should to find the tuner button on the radio..."

Hehe, obviously you haven't tried to download pics from an Ixus! ;) I used S-300 for a year before getting a G3 and this G3's plastic door is a godsend compared to the awful Ixus' rubber..er, whatever they call it (not a "door" for sure! :)). The G3's solution is one thing about it that I never get tired to enjoy in this camera.

I will agree about the strap, but even including one was a bonus as far as I saw it, so I couldn't really care less.

What surprised me most was the fact that they didn't jump to 5 megapixel. I came from an A40, so it was a nice leap for me, but I don't see much of a reason for a G2 user to upgrade.

Also, the lens cap is cheap. Falls off too easily. This is a minor complaint, but still. I paid a lot of money for my camera. I'd hate for the lencap to be its downfall one day.

That's about it. I love the camera, and would only mention these things if someone asked how I'd improve it.

Make camera body smaller, more ergonomic, better balanced.
I have a feel that smaller and more ergonomic would be mutual
exclusive with all the lots of functions the G3 has. I would prefer
to have "more ergonomic", even if that means even bigger size.
This may be the toughest one, since Canon seems reluctant to abandon the G-series' basic size and shape. But I would like to see a body more like that of the Nikon CP5000 or Olympus 5050z. Same overall size and weight, byt more compact, ergonomic, and better balanced shape.
Add depth of field calculation aid.
Definitely nice, but I can live without.
Since autofocus is generally unreliable in so many situations, the trick is to use the right focla length, focus distance, and aperture to establish a fixed point and shoot zone. This is impossible to calculate without some sort of aid, and is well beyond what most beginners would even imagine doing. A DOF aif or chart of some sort would be extremely beneficial. Remember that virtually 35mm camera lens has had one for decades. At the very least, they could print a small chart on the panel behind the LCD monitor. :-)
Offer underwater housing.
Also "nice to have", but not overly important IMHO
I know this isn't a priority one feature, but it would really be nice for us divers.

The only third party u/w housings on the market cost more than the camera itself. But Sony, Canon, and Olympus have demonstrated that they are capable of making and selling housings for only about $200!

Canon already makes them for smaller models, and Olympus makes them for their C-X0X0 models. Canon should make one for the G series.
My main wish would be an even better (in bright conditions) LCD
display
I think they should add an anti-reflective coating to the LCD, and use the type of LCD found on modern PDAs, that is reflective as well as back-lit, for use in any kind of lighting. Of course, this will drive up the price, and I'm not usre how much more I'm willing or able to pay for the convenience.

In the mean time, have you seen this gadget?

and a better optical viewfinder.

I think this is the hardest one, especially the part about the in camera data display.

I think it's understood that most everyone is extremely happy with their G3 and that this is jkust an exercise to discuss ways in which it can be further improved.

Notice that this is the one thing I did NOT include in my wish list. The difference in resolution between 4 and 5 MP cameras in negligible, but the cost is substantial in terms of pricing and quality problems.

Just look at the CA problems in the Olympus 5050z.

I think this was designed intentionally to fall off when the camera is powered up. I actually like the convenience, but I wish it were a little more secire so it wouldn't accidentally fall off when storing or just carrying around.

I use the strap that you say Olga had mentioned here. Actually, I
have had 2 of them. Had one on my last Dig camera. The strap that
comes with the G3 is terrible! Bill in Ny
I made the mistake of buying a full-sized neoprene strap only to realize that it is much too bulky and gets in the way of the LCD all the time. I've since removed it completely and am now thinking of just getting a wrist strap.

My point exactly.

Yeah, I know...

I didn't mean for my message to sound like I was railing on people for posting their nitpicks. It just struck me as interesting that the cameras are so good that we have to gripe about stuff like button placement and lens caps.

And once again, :-)

You are right, I just did a little math, and if I were to make an 18" print, the difference between 4MP and 5MP is only about 16dpi (126 vs. 142), which isn't much at all. Jumping to a camera like say, the D60 brings that up to 170. I guess the logical upgrade from my point of view is from 4 to 6+, not 4 to 5.

Also, I'm not convinced that the G3 is without CA problems, but it features enough manual settings that anyone should be able to correct them.

A camera like the D60 has a lot more than just added resolution - it has a larger imaging chip. The problem with increasing resolution on the G3 is that they would likely just shove more pixels into the same size chip, increasing noise problems.

Nobody said the G3 is perfect. But the Oly 5050 has far worse CA problems. In the G3, CA disappears entirely at apertures of about f3.5 and smaller. On the Oly, you can still see it at f5!

I got the ProStrap wrist strap, Miami style (gray leather that's a
perfect match to the G3). I think it's a classy strap befitting the
G3. I also have the black NY style for my 4500. They're very nice
straps.

Thank you for the link. Yes, I like the gray color of the Miami Style. Anybody see a good gray shoulder strap ?

The problem with shoulder straps is that they interfere with the LCD monitor. The bigger and thicker the strap, the worse the problem gets. Best thing I can imagine wouldbe something similar to Canon's dinky little strap, but made of a thinner, more pliable material.

Mike:
Thanks for your input. I think I will get a wrist strap.

if i could change things and i could only select a handfull of changes, it would be:
-have some meaningfull battery gauge like sony has
-60 sec + bulb Tv
-52mm "lensmate" like adapter and a UV filter to save the lens
-have the Tv/Av info in the viewfinder like in my T90.

regarding the lenscap debate. its better to have it falling of than messing up the lense if you turn on the power with the lenscap on like on my friends c3020.

just my 2 cents.
