The Fuji S1 really sucks on a few thing. Among them are

-The cropped viewfinder (poor magnification and confusing)
-Two batteries
-Poor lens compability (in he futur when Nikon will introduce more SW-lenses)
-3 LCDs with confusing info
-Slow AF
-Slow recycling speed

Can anyone tell me why someone would spend almost $3000 on it.

Sounds like the perfect question to ask on the Fuji forum.

Two weeks ago I purchased the S1. I'm really happy with it.
What are you talking about the viewfinder? It shows exactly what the ccd sees.

If you think it's strange try focusing with a waist level viewfinder on a Hasselblad - that's hard.

The silent wave lenses, who can afford them, I can't. For portraits and head shots (the intended market
for this camera) you don't even need autofocus.

Big deal it has one more LCD than everyone else. After 10 minutes of using it makes perfect sense.

Slow recycling time? Well compared to the D1 it is slow, but it's no slower than a couple of 15 grand

Kodak pro cameras. They are 1.5 frames per sec up to 3 frames. The Kodak DCS 330 isn't much better

and if you compare the S1 to the D30 the Canon does 3 frames per second up to 4 frames (in the raw

mode) So the S1 isn't that slow. Besides the image quality in the S1 is outstanding. The color

and the consistency is amazing. You rarely get that from 35mm print film or conventional lab.
In film you need to shoot slide film to achieve this kind of consistency.
For me it's worth it.

And don't forget the lack of ISO 100 (a deal breaker for me).

As the next poster says, you should be asking in the Fuji forum. But in addition to what Michael says below, I think you can also see that it was the first affordable SLR with interchangable lenses on the market, and there was (and still is) a huge pent up demand for that.

Personally I think the D30 will blow out the S1 (and force Fuji to lower the price even further) but that's a good thing for us all. Then someone (Kodak?) will come along and do the same for the D30 and so on and so on. These things keep getting better, and all of us reap the rewards.

And remember -- people are rather sensitive about having spend thousands on their various toys (I know I am). So try and have a little sensitivity for others and not use the words "suck" or some such. We can merely say the S1 has some deficiencies and you're curious as to why someone might buy given them. The D30 has it's own share of deficiencies and you may be asked to defend your own purchase someday.

Well said Mike. I believe that the D30, whenever it comes out, might just blow the S1 away but

the fact is that it's not available. I waited over 2.5 months for the S1 with numerous delays

and now I've read that the D30 won't be available in Japan until Oct. 20th. Well if Canon

works anything like the other Japanese camera companies the D30 might not be in the US

until thanksgiving, which means if I were to order it now there's a good chance I wouldn't
be able to shoot Christmas portraits with it. I have the Fuji now so I'm happy.

I dont have an option like Michael as I own several excellent Canon lenses. I wish Fuji had made digital body that can be used with Canon lenses. Now I have to just be patient. Kit I.

Simon you have obviously done your homework! And I'm sure you by now must have many hours of hands on experience to be able to make such remarks.

On the other hand if you had such wonderful information and experience you obviously at least know the price of the camera!

I totally agree micheal!

I had the Kodak 620 and sold it - too heavy and super dumb batteries (cads - egads!). Then I got the D1 and people were always saying 'what an awesome camera - it takes great pictures'. Bunk!

If anyone other than Nikon dared to come out with a camera that took purple pictures they would be laughed off the planet!

I just bought an S1.

In a word: FANTASTIC!

PS.

Anyone interested in my 'awesome' D1, send me an email. It's packed and ready to go - less than 6 months old - still lots of purple pictures left in the old clunker.
