Had to try the Hayes Island Effect

Here is one of my more recent HIE pics.....every picture that I have seen posted in this thread are all great. There is a lot of talent represented here.

I agree. I would be pleased to use Bud's frames on any of my work.

You could have used one of the colored frames with green or red tints ;-)

And the result is:

A Hayes Island Froggie :)

This HIE effect stuff is so cool! and Bud's frames are great.
Thank you Bud!

I can't tell you when this technique was first developed. As you have proved, painterly effects are built into Photoshop and other image editing programs; there are literally thousands of combinations or 'recipies' possible.

What I can tell you is that a Brit named David Rowely published a step-by-step on his website using Dry Brush, Palette Knife and inverse Smart Blur along with layer effects and color balance controls. He did this on an image of the Hayes Island Cafe.

Subsequently his tutorial has gained a life of its own and has appeared in litterally hundreds of websites and digital photo forums all over the web. It has most often been referred to as "The Hayes Iisland Effect."

Users of other editing programs, such as Paint Shop Pro, have either modified his steps or created their own. David_S85 in our own forum has created steps for PSP.

In the DPReview Retouching Forum, Randall Smith put together a group of Photoshop Actions (including a similer effect to HIE which he called RBS Ink & Paint) which is now being administered and updated by a successor member.

While there is no indication of the publication dates of each action, the compilation was first made available to the forum in July, 2002 and was last updated in October. one item was removed from the latest distribution in November.

So I don't think it's been misnamed, but I'm sure there are a lot of other names it could go by ;-)

Hi Carlos

First, I use Paint Shop Pro, and the technique described by David several days ago.

So I ran this one, a photo of a tourist ship from our holiday to St. Lucia last January, through the HIE steps. Then my husband asked what would it look like in black and white?

So I decided to fiddle a bit more, and ran this one through color> colorize, which is PSPs version of duotone. The settings were 25 for color and 150 for saturation, if that helps at all.
Anyway, I like that the texture and dimesionality of it is there.
Thanks,
ann
