Now that Nikon has the D5100 at $599, I'm ready to jump in. However, for those of you who have watched previous versions go through repeated lowering of prices.... is this likely the last stop, or will Nikon go lower?

It might.......but it's a good camera @ an excellent price. You can wait, and wait, and wait but that might cost you some images you'd otherwise capture. If it's within budget why not go for it?

I don't know your photo skills and how often you may use the camera so this analysis you have to do it. The only question of the analysis is the following:
  • The photos you will not take between now and the contingent price drop time worth the price difference you will get from that drop?
Let's assume that the drop will be of $50. The photos you will not take during the period from now to the price drop are worth more than $50?

Good luck with your analysis!

Nikon has been aggressive with the D5100 price. I bought mine earlier this year, a week before the price dropped $50, then $50 again a month or so later. You never know when the price will go down or up, so you just have to pull the trigger and buy it at some point. My guess is this price will be the selling price for some time to come, so don't hold your breath waiting for another $50 reduction.

It's already cheap enough. Just get one.

At least one of the cameras you thought were there for this price is gone. I just got mine. How many other people are doing the same thing? If the inventory gets low enough, Nikon will not drop the price again. It might even go back up. Why mess around? If you really want one, you know the price is right. This is a very desirable camera.

It's hard to say if the prices will get better. There wasn't much of a sale last year on Black friday due to the floods they had. In previous years they haven't been that great but there might be a slim chance there might be a good deal.

You can get a refurb D5100 from Adorama for $429 body only and $499 with the kit lense.
