Everytime I run the update software (the latest one), it says my OM-D has the latest update ? Duh it has version 1.2. Hello Olympus ?

I read something about a new updater being available. Maybe you have to update the updater first :).

I was just going to try Viewer tonight. Is that what you are using? If so, maybe it needs to be updated as well.

Lots of updating going on around here.

Nope - I updated with the old updater and got to v1.5 no problemo. You do require an internet connection however.

Found the solution, had to remove the old updater from my laptop and re-install a new one.

Is this version of the updater newest and correct for the E-M5?
Windows:
Version : 1.03
updated : Nov. 2011

I ask cause there is a newer version available for macintosh...

I suspect the others are using Macs. I just ran the updater (Ver. 1.03, Nov., 2011) on a PC and it updated the camera to Ver. 1.03 of the firmware.

I tried running it a second time and it was unable to detect the camera.

So, I am going to remove the updater program and re-install it. I will also remove the battery for 30 seconds and then try again.

If that doesn't work, I will be locked out of future updates until the issue is resolved.

My update saids 1.4 is the latest and I dont trust it. I am also using the 1.03 update. Do I just wait alittle longer and hope it push to my area?

My PC was not detecting the camera because I had not pushed the "OK" button after turning it on. Unlike other USB devices that are auto-detected, the "OK" button has to be pushed on the camera before the PC will recognize it. It is in the top section of the instructions on Page 2 -- on the line that begins "If you do not know...".

I now have Ver. 1.5 of the firmware installed and all is well. It is a two step process to update from either Ver. 1.1 or Ver. 1.2 to Ver. 1.5.

The hum is still there, but not not as loud as before.

I would suggest that you go ahead and update. But, follow the instructions carefully.

From Ver. 1.1 you update to Ver. 1.3 and then Ver. 1.5

From Ver. 1.2 you update to Ver. 1.4 and then Ver. 1.5

So, you have to run the update procedure twice.

Ok that work which is stupid with a 2 step process. I thought normally a higher update will include the previous firmware changes. They need better QA

Not sure why you say they need better QA. QA's purpose is to verify that the software conforms to requirements and works the way the designers and programmers intended. QA only gets to test what they've been given to work with. In this case the software does in fact seem to be operating the way Oly wants it to, whether or not we think it was implemented in the most efficient fashion. I say that based upon the fact that the joint update service web site indicates that the camera must be updated to v1.4 first, and then to v1.5. See below.

If blame is to be assigned, it should go to the designers of the update process, or the usability guys who didn't pick up on the fact that a multi-step process is more cumbersome and frustrating to the end user than a process that would allow multiple updates to be applied with only one invocation of the updater.

... the problems with the 1.2 version (my camera 'bricked' when I installed that) indicated there was a problem with the updater itself.

So the first step is the latest updater (via 1.3 or 1.4) and then the new features from a common process.

However I'm waiting for y'all to update before I try it!! ;-)

Plugged the camera in, and I went from 1.1 to 1.3 then from 1.3 to 1.5 with no hitch at all the whole thing was completed in about 15-20 minutes tops...

Huh? It is the responsibility of Olympus to inform the user, that a new version of the updater is required to perform the new firmware update. Normally this is done automatically, when the update process is started. But apparently, Olympus software developers failed to implement this. This is critical, because especially the Olympus update process is designed so that the user does not get in contact with web sites to download software in advance.

Poor design does not deserve excuses.

What new updater?
The newest one for windows is from 2011!

When I go and use this one what will happen?

Will the camera find firmware 1.3 ---- I install that ---- and then re run and it will find 1.5?

To update:

From Ver. 1.1 you update to Ver. 1.3 and then Ver. 1.5

From Ver. 1.2 you update to Ver. 1.4 and then Ver. 1.5

So, you have to run the update procedure twice.

There was at least one report of not being able to update without first downloading the current version of the updater program. It was not stated if the user had a PC or a Mac. But, to be certain, I would remove any previous version of the updater (through the control panel add/remove programs function) and download a fresh copy from the Olympus website and use it -- even though it does not appear to be more recent than Nov., 2011. Perhaps a simple change was made and the programmer neglected to update the release version and date. In any case, the update process is too critical not to take every reasonable precaution to ensure a success.

...but I have Windows Vista and Seven machines at home (and have use [sic] Windows since Windows 286) and not all old software is automatically removed when updated; depends on the software manufacturer.
