Got too close to people and the faces on the edge exhibit distortion.

Any tricks? What is the zoom level where distortion goes away? Can the camera be set to start at that zoom level? At what distance are people distortion free at the widest?

I got good results fixing with DxO Viewpoint but would rather avoid it.

Zoom is remembered in the Memory registers...it is the only setting that does this

Darn good question, I would learn from the answer, as would many, and that is what the forum is all about. Sorry I cannot help with the answer.

Hi,

If you got too close already and have to use the wide angle side of the lens for getting the subject into the frame, little can be done - other than usage of PP tools which are able to remove distortions to a certain degree.

Distortions on the WA side of the lens are not bad "per se" and can represent actually an interesting POV/perspective. But for portraiture / people photography such distortions are mostly unwanted and can be avoided by maintaining a little bit more distance and using the lens in tele range. In general the best range of focal length for portraiture is considered from about 70 to 135mm. It is not that tele wouldn't mean distortion free shooting. Actually the tele range is compressing distances - but this is a look which mostly favours the subject. As an example, where a WA lens might render subject's nose apparently longer, the tele range would make it appear shorter. Hope this helps.

why would this be a nonsense post / trolling? Seemed like a legitimate question?
It is a legitimate question by all means. But when it comes from someone who constantly post similar questions, expecting everyone to help him without bothering even to read a manual and bashing other cameras at the same time, it is trolling. If you'll read some of the OP posting history, you'll understand.

As usual your meanness shows through. You write "It is a legitimate question by all means." But you discriminate against those you have decided to be mean to, and thus the legitimate aspect is drowned by your meanness.

You are a mean bully.

People have the right to opine on the cameras they like or not like. Otherwise why don't we all like all the cameras out there and live in I like them all land.

But you are mean to people. It has served you to intimidate people around you. Sad to go through life hurting people's feelings.

You can also try just adding a bit of barrel distortion, or just cancelling lens distortion correction (comes free with raw converters that don't correct lens distortion).

Regarding the suitable focal lengths, I think you should just try it, can use a ball if noone wants to pose for you.
