Ainsworth: "Sony worried about Fujifilm's X-Trans Sensor"

I think this is a bit short sighted. Sure, in absolute resolution terms the NEX-7 produces the most accurate picture at the lowest ISO. Whether it is the most attractive picture is questionable indeed (it isn't to me, and I've owned both a NEX-7 and an X-Pro1). I own an M9 as well and I can tell you the only thing that is close is the Fuji.

To be frank I assume Sony ARE bricking it given the arrival of the X-E1. Their USP has gone.
I'm a dual Nex-7 and X100 user, and, oddly enough, there are many like me on other forums that aren't buying the X-P1 BECAUSE of the sensor. Go figure.

Even when raw conversion improves, Trans-x will always have lower chroma resolution than Bayer. You're trading low ISO performance for high ISO performance, so pick your poison.

I'm guessing he's someones favorite 'internet oracle'.

Either that, or if we have to ask it isn't worth answering as we can't be members of the 'club'.

I think there are a lot of people on the fence about Fuji and xtrans, if they get the xe1 right and figure out the raw, they will win a lot of people over, I dont see how sony would worry so much they have Canon and Nikon to contend with
I wish adobe would hurry up and fix their raw conversion. If they ever get it right then I would be more comfortable investing in a fuji x-trans system.

I think the engineers look a long way ahead. Sony are a major sensor supplier. If Fuji have done this sensor in house, and Sony know what the potential is, they may find they have serious competition for sensors and a very difficult patent to bypass. May mean big license fees for Fuji.

Remember, Fuji used to make film. If they can establish themselves in the sensor market they could be a major player given their imaging expertise.

Fujifilm was a big time player in the sensor market early on, but faded from the fight when they withdrew the SuperCCD SRII. After that, they sold off their sensor fabrication plant and contracted out to external manufacturers.

There are now very few players in the sensor market. Sony has an extremely dominant position. Even Canon is struggling to keep up.

If he's an "Internet oracle," then how come nothing turns up in a search?

I'm now assuming there is no "Alexander Ainsworth" and that the original poster made the whole thing up. quote included. This is certainly one of the dumbest and most irresponsible posts I've seen in a long, long time.

You've just summed up, rather nicely, what most people think of "BillyInya's" posts.

And the wonderful thing about all of this is that the mythical 'Ainsworth" has engendered all of this passion and insight about sensor semiconductor fabrication and the technical/business realities of creating these things.

No one seems to know who the Ainsworth fella might be but that doesn't impede the spontaneous explosion of 'informed' speculation.

Gotta love the internet and DPReview forums. This be da place where 'real' experts provide their insights and prognostications to further the course of photography.

This BillyInya is obviously a complete idiot and needs to be treated as such.

This would be a mistake.

BillyInya seems to be the one person here who knows this Ainsworth fellow.

This association has been the impetus for this 'mighty fine' thread.

Now, shall we return to our normal vapid jousting?

Or a figment of his imagination that fooled many people into postulating nonsense. As he has not replied he is probably laughing his head off at the comments.

Maybe this is helpful:

Born Alexandra Ainsworth in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to a dentist father and a school teacher mother, Lexi began dancing on stage by age 6 with the local ballet company. This lead to her appearance in the professional theater production of The Wizard of Oz where she performed as a Lullabye League munchkin ...

Thank you, that is very helpful. Evil Munchkins may know more of Sony's concerns than the original poster of this thread.
