I am finally ready to order a D800. I'm considering Lexar cards:
32GB 1000x CF, and
64GB SDXC 400x.
What do you think of the cards? Which should i use for JPEG and which for RAW?

I use the camera for two very different things. I shoot portraits in a controlled environment, and i shoot wildlife in East Africa. Different lenses, different format. FX for portraits and DX for animals

According to rob Galbraith the Lexar is the fastest with the D800.

But, I have always used Extreme PRO Sandisk
The 64gb SD 95 mb/s is really cheap right now.

I had a problem with it hanging my D800 ... but a new one from B&H works!
old one I will get a new exchange from Sandisk.

Using both Extreme PRO ... with the SD as backup.

Please feel free to criticize, make suggestions, and edit any of my photos & re-post, to help show me 'the way'. * I am trying to Elevate the Level of my 'Snap Shots' :)

After I read the performance charts on robgalbraith.com I bought four Transcend 64GB CF chips this month at B&H for my D4s and D800E bodies. Now I have enough chip capacity to shoot a whole day w/o having to carry a netbook to offload the chips. It's the 1st time since I bought a Digital Wallet that I don't need to haul a portable chip storage device around with me. I'm happy.

I'm sure that you know how important it is to have the second card be backup when on a trip to Africa (unless you happen to live there). I would use the second as backup and not overflow. I would also keep a very close watch on where the full cards are at all times. You are one lucky guy to get to go on a wildlife trip with the d800...Got a spare 600 lens you won't be using while your gone? Ha.

Your profile lists your occupation as 'Retired'...Where do I apply?

There is no place to apply to retire. One just does it. I am 70, and quit active business pursuits at age 58. I still have management duties for some commercial and industrial real estate. The only way to fully retire is to die. Then it is someone else's problem. I appreciate your comments. tom

PS i do enjoy photography, and i had not considered the second card slot as back-up. Good advice.

...and don't use either one for JPG.

I use Sandisk 32 and 64 Extreme Pro CF and SD cards and they work great.
The slower 128 GB SD card is very noticeably slower when shooting bursts.

A 32 GB card will hold about 700 lossless compressed RAW files from the D800E.

700 images on D800E with a 32gb card .... in DX format ... right?

-sadly lacking a witty clichéd comment-

I am using a pair of memory cards acting as a backup. The primary pair is:

Sandisk Extreme 64GB 60mb/sec UDMA-6 CF and
Sandisk Extreme 64GB 45mb/sec SDXC

My second pair is:

Transcend 32GB 400x UDMA CF and
Sandisk Extreme 32GB 45mb/sec SDHC

BTW, I actually went for Lexar 400x 64GB CF card but the card had an error when I inserted it on my D800. It also could not format the card so I returned it and went for Sandisk.

Have never heard anything bad about Lexar cards but don't have much experience with them, I've mainly stayed with Sandisk cards through the years and have never had a problem.

Hi Harry,

It depends also bit on how your copy your images to the computer, is it USB 3 or faster, you can buy fast cards, but waiting an hour or longer before they are pumped to the computer is not a nice thing.

By means of speed in relation to the D800. You don't need to buy the fastest card to get that 4 and something frames per second on CF/SD. I use Ultra cards of Sandisk which are not the fastest and I never have any buffer problems with the D800.

Both Lexar and Sandisk are very reliable when it comes to memory cards (I've still 250MB CF cards bought in 2003 which work perfectly.)

Still, an accident may happen or you may loose a card, so I always advice to buy 2 large capacity cards instead of 1 huge one.

I use Sandisk Ultra cards 16GB for stills on all my cameras' and 32GB SD cards for movie clip capturing.
