No Touchscreen on NEX 6 ...

Step away from DPreview and research!

Dial in total control.

The NEX-6 features a perfectly designed control dial, Fn (function) button, and touch screen with touch shutter function lets you focus on the shot instead of the menus.

Do you trust dpreview or sony's official product page?

http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921666488065#overview

I think it makes more sense to trust the official page; because it is sony who made the product, dpreview only used it for a while
Asked them to post a response on this forum on touch screen question.

wll
If it does exist, nobody except Sony seems to know.

Brilliant, no touch screen.

For once, I'm happy for segmenting the markets.

This is a photographer's camera, not a smartphone, touchpad gadget.

For shooting picture, with your eye on the finder or on the screen all the time and your fingers doing the mode/focus/zoom/other features, without you removing your eyes from the target OR your fingers blocking the view on the screen.

It's a great thing that NEX6 wasn't designed for touch screen operation.

At least, great for me :)
It's not about wishing the camera were more like a smartphone, it's about the fact that a touchscreen is an extremely useful piece of technology to have. Especially on a small mirrorless camera where space for controls is at a premium.

There really are a lot of possibilities a touchscreen opens up. Touch to focus / shoot, adding buttons for quick access to settings, touch an area to lock exposure, etc.

Saying you're thankful there is no touchscreen is short sighted.
This is what old people and snob photographers do. They tell you to take one way, the traditional way, and if you don't, your labeled as somehow less of a good photographer. Want to be this guy is over 60 years old?

Might be (but there are always exceptions ;)). I'm over 60 and I love it when technology gives me options and better ways of doing things.

Now, we just have to wait around until we get some "real" info on just what all this touch screen on the 6 can do. :)

...perhaps not the case for N6, but in great majority of cases
touchscreen UIs are implemented instead of PROPER set of external,
direct controls - so... "disable TS" actually means "to cripple" further
already poor UI,

jpr2
Yes, that's true. However, the Nex cameras with a touchscreen have an option to disable touch functions if desired.

i held off the NEX7 because it does not have a touchscreen to focus.
I was really disappointed after reading dpreview. Hope they are wrong.
moving the focusing spot with dials is very awkward and slow.
making us choose between built-in EVF and touch screen really annoys me.

Well, they just lost a sale then. I assume I won't be the only one. I don't like going backwards in time.

Just have to wait a bit, the NEX-6N (or NEX-6R or whatever) will be released in a year, and will come with a touch screen.
Or better, look at the competitors.

The touchscreen has become a significant part of my 5N technique. I use it to focus almost every shot these days. So, I'll wait until the next generation before upgrading my body. Apps, Wi-Fi, and viewfinder not good enough. And even if the sensor has phase pixels, I bet that it doesn't focus anywhere near DSLR speed.

Looks like I've got another year to save up for the next body. I wouldn't mind having that pancake kit lens, but my 30mm Sigma would probably still be my #1 lens.

I love how you can touch your picture in review mode to zoom to 100% exactly where you touched. That is very handy. I'd just like to see another dial so I could scroll through the images at 100%.

I agree about touching to focus. I get super sharp pictures by putting a focus point over the eye with a tap. The 6 is definitely not for me.

+1

That's what I said in another post. It's not just for focusing or menu slogging...I like it during review. :)

Ya, Sony admitted they were wrong on their website and is changing it.

wll
Really? Really? And who did they admit it to? Don't believe everything you hear; instead, believe what you see. If you go to the SONY WEBSITE (no blogs or preview sites), and look under features, you will see that the camera has indeed a touch-screen. The "no, it was a mistake and Sony will correct it" rumor has been circulating for quite a while now, but the feature is still there.

This is not Audiovox or Pantech we're talking about. Being the biggest electronics company in the world, and being as detailed-oriented as Sony is, it's really hard to imagine that this would be a mistake. I'm sure they have people who get paid for reviewing and posting this product specifications and they must check the text for typos, gramatical errors, and especially bad description and false advertising.

I do believe DPR sample did not have touchscreen, but that was a pre-production model. That unit did not have the wifi and apps working either; does that mean such features won't be present either?

Are you serious dude? Ok, do yourself a favor: click on that link you posted (or just go to sony.com) and LOOK at the NEX-6 features. You will see this:

"Advanced Control Dial

Mode control dial and Quick Navi assure quick and intuitive operation comparable to DSLR cameras Control dial, Fn (function) button and touch screen (including touch shutter function) combine to greatly facilitate operation and speed getting the shot."
