The New Sony HDR-GW77: waterproof, dustproof, shockproff and small, but...

I have used both PNY and Sandisk 32GB class 10 microcards with no problem.

First time I put in a card, I got an error message. Turns out I had put in the card upside down (check that first - the error message is not informative about what is wrong, and it seems to take a card upside down easily).

The OIS.

The OIS is exactly the same as in most good/big camcorders (optical+active mode). Some of the clips I have posted at telephoto, however, are shaky. But not all. The reason is twofold:

1. The camera is really light. It is harder to hold a light camera steady compared to a heavier one.

2. For many shots I am holding the camera with one hand. I never did/do this with bigger camcorders (they are too heavy!). So it is this bad habit that is contributing to some observed shakiness. Treated the same, the stabilization should be as good as any camcorder except maybe the new high-end Sony camcorders with the floating lens asembly.

Thank you! I'll try it again, both ways. I used the GW77 and the FS700 today to get video of the dogs in the swimming pool. Great combination for this sort of thing.

Key features highlighted: sound - from soft harmonica, to solo singing to a 12-cylinder diesel and an airpalne engine.

Sights: rigging a tall ship, requiring extra telephoto; a boat ride, showing the stabilizer in action; and more.

See old-time trolleys, learn about them, and ride on one through the beautiful Connecticut shoreline. Also, flowers, butterflies, fishermen, a guineafowl, and chickens!

And, again, listen to the sounds of nature (chickens, birds, guineafowl) and the sounds of trolleys and the clear lecturing by the trainman.

Mark, all your video's on Vimeo with the GW77v are dropdead gorgeous (and the others with Pany as well)- based on your video's I got the Sony last week; of course, I don't have your interesting locales or more importantly, the experience or talent to get such results. Do you do any sharpening in post ? Again, thanks for posting these ! :)

Thank you very much.

I do no sharpening in post. In fact, none of the videos have undergone any altering whatsoever - they are trimmed and combined with no conversion and uploaded straight to Vimeo. Vimeo does perform a conversion (to 108030p from 108060p), but you can download the original file. So what you are seeing is straight from the camera; no editing tweaks.

Thank you Mark, I'm a complete novice when it comes to video - I have so much to learn & experience.I asked about the sharpening because I've looked at other peoples video's and yours are much nicer looking !

I also wanted to ask if you are using some kind of stabiliser when you are walking around - I find it hard enough whipping out a video cam and pointing it at people - let alone a video cam PLUS a stabiliser of some kind; I've got several but never used it in public ! Thanks in advance for your answer - Jim

No extra stabilizer - the built-in optical stabilization with active mode is very good. You can see its effectiveness in some videos when I follow people around with the camera.

The camera is so light and small, it is actually a challenge to hold it steady, but the stabilizer does well.

I have the same camera (well, the 55VE version, which is the PAL version with no internal memory) it's a great camera. i shot my holiday video with it including underwater video's.

these video's have been color corrected so they did not come out of the camera like this, but you can get a clear sense of what is possible with the camera.

do turn on HD to see the full potential. 95% was shot with this camera. the remaining 5% with the Nikon D7000 (only the shots with very low DOF)

Makes very good use of the camcorder. Nice.
