The Sunday BIRD Volume 8, Issue 13. September 9, 2012

Nice lighting on the rosella, and your Robin is a great shot.
Nice detail on the maggie.

The cuckoo is an outstanding image - shows what that camera/lens can produce in the right hands.

Peter

Hi Makarand,
it's always good to go back into one's archives.

I really like your Shikra - reminds me of our Goshawk

The kingfisher is a lovely shot.

The pair of Treepies is a nice composition - beautiful birds

Might be improved by cropping out the dark corners and levelling the riverbank in the background.

The Hoopoe is a strange looking bird - unlike anything we have in Australia

thanks for showing these

Peter

Well he had several goes at it and not without a fight. I was real blessed to be able to see and capture it. At one stage i could almost interpret the other cormorant's thinking ...

"I don't believe it. It actually fits!"

That is a nice catch of the cormant. I've not seen one with a fish so large - on a Sydney River ?
Wattle and Friar bids are also good catches.
The Sitella, I don't see many of these up close and I don't have any shots.
The Robin is very nice

Peter
Thanks Peter. Believe it or not it was in Parramatta River, the section that has a weir at both ends just down from Church St. I stood there half stunned when I saw it and it took a few moments to realise that i had my camera with me. It was indeed a big fish for a little mouth and neck.

I have been trying to get better shots of the friarbird with no luck. They are up high in the tree and dont really seem bothered by me.

What I am looking forward to this year is hopefully getting a shot of a Channel-billled Cuckoo :)

Simply splendid shots of the Peacock Colin.

So the EC-20 obviosuly works quite well with the 50-200mm. That would give some really nice reach, and the E5 seems to be able to handle it quite well with plenty of detail.

Very nice shots Dennis ESPECIALLY that Cuckoo. These are another set of images that makes me thing twice about the EC-20 and the 50-200mm. Did you use f8 to get the most sharpness out of the lens with the EC-20? There would then be the 2 stop loss of light on top of that which is no doubt why ISO 800 comes into play. Very impressive results from both you and Colin with tha combination.

Thansk again

I work in parra so I know that part of the river. The fish looks like a carp. Good hunting by the cormorant.

Peter

Nice capture. I am curious about the shutter speed. 10/13000? I have never seen a shutter speed expressed this way. Wouldn't it be 1/1300?

Richard

Yes, it's the same as 1/1300. I don't know why it comes out that way - except maybe that's how the camera sees it in its internal calculations.

Thanks for the comments. I find that f/8 with 50-200mm SWD + EC2.0 gives me the best results. I generally use ISO 800 unless the light is really good. I am happy with the results I get with this combo. I have the 70-300mm but found I always struggled with lens for birding. Since I got the 50-200 I no longer use the 70-300.
Cheers
Dennis

Thansk for the info Dennis.

I have the E5 and EM5 and birding using the EM5 and the 50-200mm is kinda hard unless the bird aint moving or at least not moving much. I then ended up getting the 100-300mm Panny which is good, but doesnt seem to compare with the 50-200mm (yeh...ive been spoilt hehe) and I wasnt really expecting it to be but the Oly lens is just so darn good and seeing a few posts here using the 50-200mm and EC-20 got me thinking.

I used the E5 with the 50-200mm today and the difference is clear and whist the EM5 is a great camera the E5 still holds its own in focus speed and quality, not to mention feel and balance. Still very happy it :)

Thanks again for the info.

I get a feeling that the Cormorant died. Where the sectioned off part of the river drains into the main river near the ferry, there was a dead Cormorant today. I wonder if it is the same one I shot eating that fish?

And yep, you are right. The fish is indeed a carp, not a mullet. Dont know why i thought it was a mullett.

Its actually not a bad area and nice to walk along especially past the weir as you get into Parramatta Park and there is usually a bit of birdlife there too.

Nice work with this combo Collin.

I liked peacock shots but the feather shot the most. Even ducks are nice.
This combo seens to work well with E5 than my expetience with E 510.
With 510 I can not use ISO 800 nor stop down the lens.

hmmm.. Still OMD reports has confused me and stopped pulling trigger on buying E 5.

Let me see couple of months whether there is any develpement on focusing front with OMD. Its ISO and megapixel is alluring me.
