I used to have a 18-200 with my d7000 that was great for travel. Not the sharpest lens but ok for travel. I purchased a replacement for my d800e which is the 28-300. I ran a bunch of non scientific tests and the results were as followed:

With the exception of at 28mm. The order of sharpness and iq were as follows:

D800e & 28-300, then d800e and 18-200 cropped, then d7000 & 28-300, and lastly d7000 and 18-200. So no big surprise here...i compared at 18/28, 35/50, and 200/300 all at the widest aperture open and at 5.6.

A 28mm the 28-300 was really poor!

I also compared it against my 105mm vr and it was just not comparable! But again ok for what is meant for. Just wanted to share :)

The D7000 with only 39 AF points and, being DX, uses quite long AF detection lines.

The D800 has much shorter detection lines than the D3/700 (but same as D3s) - all are much shorter (compared to viewfinder size) than the D7000.

It may be at 28mm on the D800 the subject detail under the AF point (perhaps OK with the D7000) is too small for the D800 - see page 100 of the D800 instructions.

Having used the 28-300 on my D800E and also an avid user of the Gen 1 version of the 18-200 on D200/D80, I agree with your assessment.

IMHO the 28-300 is a lens most suited to the 1.2x crop mode on the D800/E. For 28mm even at f/11 the borders are blurred more often than not (corners are even worse). Not a bad thing at all as we get 5fps back at 1.2x mode.
