I have a specific question...and I need help...ASAP

I'm taking pictures for my church & need to print lots of 8x10...or whatever other sizes that

the people want; what I notice when printing at Costco is that my pictures gets cropped each
time---whether 4x5, 5x7 or 8x10!!!!

I would set the size in PS7, but still get cropped!!! I "stroke" the image so that I could get the

white border like the professionals, but when printed, I don't even see the the white border...so

I printed the same image at 13x15 ( the biggest size Costco offers) ----& still...I don't see the
image that I created in PS7.

Question: How do I print EXACTLY what I created in PS7????

PS. I take pictures w/ the Nikon D100---so the image is quite large---even when I converted to

Costco has it's uses, digital imaging is NOT one of them. Go to an output shop that does this and only this for a living, They will know how to properly process your files and get the results that you have worked for. Buy toilet paper at Costco, not digital imaging.

What are the height and width in pixels of a jpeg you took to CostCo to print that they then cropped?

Costco has done exactly what you want for me. The printer has a PC with a screen of menus. All they have to do is punch in a percent and the screen will show an image of the paper with your photo on it. If it is not sized right, they can enter a percent of reduction and get it right.

I usually go into Costco on a weekday afternoon when they aren't busy. They have always been willing to play around with the machine for me.

The nay-sayers above can get all their printing done at a lab where it costs 5 times as much, but each job and each customer has its requirements. If the customer loves Costco 8x10s which cost me 2 bucks, as well as they would like lab prints for 10, then I'll go to Costco and be profitable. When I need lab quality, I will use the lab.

Debihoang,

Can't say for Costco exactly since i use Sam's Club, but they do have the same equipment. I use PS to set up all the shots I need and burn to cd's (one for each size reduces confusion at the store).

I've found that I have to tell the operator (and write on the enevelope) DO NOT RESIZE, PRINT CENTERED ON PAPER AS PROVIDED.

At least for the guys at Sam's, they then don't do an automatic crop/resize to get full to the edge printing.

I explain that I've already done everything to get it to print at 8x10 or 8x12 or 4x6 or 5x7 or whatever...

Hope that helps.

yes, that is true..how did you calculate that???
anyway, but that doesn't explain when I print the same picture in 13 x15 &
still the picture was cropped!!!

Looks like you are making a 10.027x6.667 photo so I assume the
width is getting croped off is this correct

Hi From Notherm Michigan,

I have been going to Sams Club
aka Walmart.. and getting 8 x 12
for $1.98 with very little cropping.
8 x 10 you loose that 2 inches, which
is a about 16 sq. inches. So do the
math for percentages...

Cheers,
Hugh

p.s. hope I didn't rain on anyones parade....

Ok for a 13x15 you want pixles at 3900x4500 for your 8x10 its pixles at 2400x3000 you need to crop your photos to these dimensions I'd also use a resolution say 300

I don't know what everyone above is talking about (they're obviously confused), but it is really simple.

It's all about aspect ratio, and Costco is doing what you told them to do. Garbage in, garbage out. If you supply an odd size, they will crop.

Since this has been discussed a lot of times, I will be VERY brief.

D100 Aspect ratio is 2/3 (2000/3000), 8/10 = 4/5.

In photoshop, you need to crop your photos, at 4/5. The easiest way to do this is pick the marquee tool, select "constrain proportions" and enter int he aspect ratio you need. 8/10, 4/5 etc, and crop.

Make sense?

They do a pretty decent job of printing what you send. I did get one cropped print, but when I checked my image, I had made the mistake - not Cosco.

I should really learn to check these posts before I hit "post".

You want to select the rectangular marquee tool in PS, then select the style "fixed aspect ratio", enter in your desired size, then crop.

That's it.

Let me say that what ing is saying is also correct as far as getting the photo into a dimension that will resize correctly. So with all this in mind take your photo 10.027x6.667 = 3008 x 2000 and check Constrain Proportions and change the 6.667 to 8 you'll now have an 8x12.032 photo. At this point do what ing said below take the Marquee set to Fixed aspect ratio 4 & 5 draw your marquee move it to were you like the crop and crop that's it, its now and 8x10 pixles will be at 2400x3000 go get your print.

not to discount anybody else's reply, but the way I like to do it in Photoshop is:

select the crop tool

enter the W and H values in the toolbar above the image (use inches in your case)

DELETE any resolution number whether pixels/in or pixels/cm (this forces Photoshop to recalculate the image ppi rather than resample your image

then draw your crop selection on the image. the crop tool will automatically constrain itself to the proper aspect ratio, based on the W and H values you entered.

When your happy with your selection, perform the crop and that's it!

hope this helps...

okay, please be patient w/ me...

I selected the rectangular marquee:
style: Fixed Aspect Ratio
width: 8 in
height: 10 in

...but somehow I can only draw a SQUARE box, not the rectangle that I expected---so what I did was to choose

style: normal
draw a rectangle w/ the marquee 1st,
then went back up & chose

style: Fixed Aspect Ratio
width: 8 in
height: 10 in

then crop...

...but still I only got
document size:
width: 9.173 in
height: 6.393 in

...so I tried another method:
1st,
style: Fixed size
width: 8 in
height: 10 in

then crop...

..but when I look at the image size, I still get
width: 8 in
height: 6.667 in

Is there another easier way???
Show I open a new window with 8x10, then just cut & paste the picture over????

As others have noted, if you want to print on 8x10 paper with no cropping you should give them a jpeg with the dimensions in the same ratio.

My CostCo can print 12x18's which is perfect for the D100's 2x3 ratio. 12x18 isn't advertised and not all clerks know they can print this size. So you should ask someone who looks like they've worked there a while to see if your costco has the same capability.

okay, let me get something straight here...

when I crop, with Width : 10 & Height 10, it only let me draw a square box...

but under the cropping symbol it says:

"Crop 5 inch x 4 inch 300dpi"

then, I went to Image Size & it shows that I have 4 x 5 picture
I changed the Image Size & it gave the 8 x 10 like I wanted...

Is that what you mean by
constrain itself to the proper aspect ratio, based on
the W and H values you entered ???
also, when I print, will it change the resolution---I mean the sharpness
of the picture since I change from 4x5 to 8x10, & it did that Resample
Image thing...
Does it matter if I check or unckeck the Resample Image ???

If so, which of the 3 options should I choose:
Nearest Neighbor
Bilinear
Bicubic
???

...appreciate your comments

I ran into this same problem. Costco told me to do the following. Size for the format that I exactly want. Then whoever is doing the printing that day, tell them to use the Quick Print menu and select No Crop. That way, it prints everything exactly as you gave it to them. Their system will not manipulate any of your prints. I give them files with borders that I put on them and get the borders printed out. So it hasn't been a problem. Also, if you give them an off-size that doesn't fit the standard format, no big deal. Tell them the same thing. What you will get is just a bigger border on your print that you can trim off. For example, If you size a print for 7x9, they can print it on an 8x10 sheet. Just Quick Print, No Crop. You will get the 7x9 printed on an 8x10.

dont do that. dont change anything via the 'Image Size...' dialog.

what you have to envision is that you are simply 'trimming' the image with this method. After you select the crop tool, set you W & H, and delete the resolution number (usually 300 by default), you have effectively locked the crop tool to the aspect ratio set with W & H. For example:

set W to 10 in and H to 10 in = the crop tool can only draw a square since width and height have to be equal.

Using this method will only trim pixels outside of the crop selection, it will not effect the resolution by resampling. This is becauseyou erased the pixels/in number before you cropped. Doing this assures that PS will not take your crop selection and force it to 300ppi by enlarging or reducing the relative resolution based on the new crop size.
