Took this today at Cotswold Wildlife Park in the UK

This is the original file jpeg from the camera, no post processing and shot with no creative settings, etc. Shot with my kit 16-650mm SSM lens. Not bad for a 4.6mb jepg file!

For those who aren't familiar with this feature it offers 1.4x and 2x digital zoom within the camera. I usually assign the button for other features but thought I'd give it a try today.

In all seriousness - has anyone tried to compare taking a shot and cropping later vs. using the teleconverter? Which one is better?

Your photo finally convinced me that 24MP is and always has been overkill!

Every time I want to post an image taken at 24MP to this forum, I need to crop or otherwise process the image to meet posting requirements.

So far, most of my photography can just as well be handled with the 12MP sensor setting, and it makes the resulting files MUCH easier to handle. I am not a pixel peeper and rarely enlarge an image beyond 8"x12".

When I was still using my A700, that was all that was available anyways, and I was perfectly happy with that.

As a bonus, by selecting the 12MP setting to start with , when I switch to the 1.4X smart teleconverter setting, the MP count remains at 12MP, it only switches to 6MP at the 2X setting, which is still quite useable for my type of shooting.

I do prefer the 'in camera' cropping that the smart teleconverter provides, over 'post processing' cropping.

Karl,...that is a very good tip! When I'm in Teton and Yellowstone, I use the Teleconverter feature often. Sure, it's a crop but you're able to see what you're going to get. When shooting animals at any distance, you can tell their attitude more clearly and get the shot you want.

I did. I unfortunately deleted the results, but I could see no comparable difference between the two. Further magnification showed that they were very similar as well.
