Hi !

I am currently considering to replace my Sony HX 10V since I am not satisfied with the image quality.

I was considering something between the Sony RX100 or Nex 5n or 7 or even an Pentax K-5

I know these are totally different cameras but since I am new to photo I don't really know where to go to have a good picture quality ?

Thanks for your help.
Regards

I am not a English native speaker so not sure I will find/use the right words for these technical discussions....

Pictures are not sharp and in low light, QA drops very fast.

I know this is nothing comparable but when I looked at picture done by a friend using a Nikon D3100 you really see a clear difference. ( I understand d that this is Normal)

Just wondering I.e. if an Sony RX100 would be close to one of these monsters like the mentioned Nikon ?

Regards

Thanks but this is the 3100 review.

I believe this one is relatively old and would an Sony RX100 already overtakes it in regards of image quality ?

regards

The Nikon D3100 is an entry-level DSLR camera, the Sony RX100 is an enthusiast compact camera. They are of different categories.

Understood.

One should nevertheless still be able to compare image quality without considering that they are in different categories ?!

Different kinds of cameras have different advantages. If your primary concern is image quality (IQ) you are best off with a DSLR. Their larger sensors give them an advantage especially at high ISO's. FF DSLR's like the Canon 5D or Nikon D800 have larger sensors than APS-C sensor cameras like the Nikon D3100 and should have better IQ.

If you are choosing between a Nikon D3100 and Sony RX100 based on IQ, the D3100 with its larger sensor should have better IQ especially at high ISO's.

You can use the comparison shot that the link in JoeR's email to select in the other panels the NEX 5/7 and the K-5 and get an idea of the improvement you will get over a HX9-V (which is not much different the in IQ from your HX10-V) and compare them with your friend's D3100. (at different ISO and different parts of the test photo)

DPreview does not have a review of the RX100 yet but there are other review sites that will enable you to compare it with say the NEX 7.

As other posters have noted, there is much more to the picture capabilities of a camera than the image quality demonstrated from a studio test.

You will get more convenience from the RX100 but better future proofing (although not the best) from the other three on your list.
